If you have to fly 6 times per month to attend client meetings, I imagine you will burn out quickly
This… isn’t that much? Plenty of road warriors who do a hell lot more than that.
Who would cover the hotel and car? This all sounds expensive.
To my knowledge the firm will cover the cost.
This sounds insane to me and definitely not worth it unless: (1) you need to move now, for example, to care for a sick family member or your spouse for a new job and needs to move; AND (2) you have some strong assurance that you will be made partner in the next few years.
Otherwise this is a huge expense and inconvenience for little apparent gain.
That is certainly plan b but if I can I would like to stay with the current firm as 1) they pay market and the firms in state 2 do not 2) I have a good relationship with the major partners at my current firm 3) partnership is almost all but guaranteed assuming my current pace/work quality with multiple partners getting ready to retire and me doing all of their work in this space. I do have a few just in case interviews lined up with other firms and a plan c option as well.
To continue to work in this practice/eventually make partner at my firm. Having a small home base in state 1 with a cheap commuter car for the meetings makes sense to me for consistencies sake so I don’t have to worry about not being able to get a room/car when I come back with the con of the firm not paying for such things. But I would assume that if I make partner (big assumption I know) that I could afford that level of expense and may not be thinking of any tax benefits in that regard (not trying to let the tax tail wag the dog but something to keep in mind I think). What are y’all’s thoughts? Anyone else travel between two offices in this manner that has any advice?
1. Why?
2. How far apart are the states? Are we talking VA and DC or New York and the west coast? Or one of many options in the middle?
1. Various reasons.
2. Not comfortable saying the states but it would be about a 2 hour flight one way between the two locations. The drive from the office to the client site varies in time from 30mins to 3 hours depending on the client. Each meeting takes anywhere from 15mins to 6 hours on the extreme ends. Average time for the client meeting is 2 hours. Average time to travel from the office to the client site is about 1.5 hours.
