H&K over GT imo. I have friends at both firms and GT has seemed to have a more toxic culture from secondhand sources. You’ll work like crazy as an associate at either shop. Which practice group? I can only speak for the corporate groups at both firms; no idea what litigation is like at H&K.
Hello. I’m only a rising 2L so I think they’ll have me on a rotational basis. I am certainly looking more towards corporate than litigation though.
I just left GT (on good terms). Here's the general scoop about GT.
It is blackbox everything. Each office gets paid different and has different billable requirement. Almost all offices are paid below market, and the gap gets bigger the more senior you get. Some offices pay market for the first three years but your bonus is never market. There's no real formula shared on how bonus is calculated, except Miami where it is based on billable hours. I was in a secondary market office and it was very loosely tied to revenues collected. Your experience will depend on office and group, just like any other firm. Overall, I enjoyed GT outside of the compensation issue. People seemed to generally care and helped when I asked for help. But I definitely heard some horror stories... I imagine like any other big law firm.
With all that being said, I'd prioritize HK over GT. But GT would still be a great opportunity... Try to go to one of the prominent offices like Miami, NY... Any California office.
Feel free to DM me to talk more about GT.
Good luck!!
Hello and thank you. Yes a 2L summer position. My hope, as probably is the hope of most summers, is to secure an associate position post 3L. Anyway thanks for the information.
Holland & Knight, period.
GT if you are in Miami. HK anywhere else

I had a great experience at GT and was paid above market as a senior associate. Very office dependent but I was in a major office, not Miami.

That’s sad. Thanks for your insight.

Not sure anyone here is really addressing the fact it's HK Nashville which is basically it's own firm from a merger and therefore different than anyone's experience there. Nashville will see growing pains as rate pressure causes departures. I can say GT is a great place long term, but you get to pick your office and if you go to an office where there is lots of demand for talent you'll be pretty well set to lateral. There won't be many Nashville options at top firms if you're at HK. And I'm not sure HK even pays market in Nashville.
I heard it's now $360k at the top end
I think it's ultimately a Nashville vs. Miami question - but HK Nashville gets at least a minimal tilt for being a good place to work.
GT heavily rewards bringing in work so if you want to hustle/sell and have connections and want to deal with minimal firm buraucracy while selling work then it can be a great place. Otherwise I’d vote HK.
That fits with my perception/experience. Partners are so heavily rewarded for bringing in work it creates fights for who gets origination credit.
If you’re interested in corporate then HK for sure
GT Boston any good?

Absolutely H&K. DO NOT go to GT unless you're completely desperate.
