That feels like a sales role under the guise of marketing
I’ve got an OTE plan like this and it’s fine. It’s not as aggressive base/commission split as a sales gig. Personally, I’m a huge fan of this concept for all employees where it can be implemented. But it can be tricky depending on the role. Helps people keep their head on and in the game. If you’ve never had this type of comp it can be daunting, but I think if you’re confident in your work, there’s no reason to worry. For context, I’ve also been a sales person for a good chunk of my career too. The key is to make sure the goals set are functionally achievable. I’ve found if things really fall apart (*cough* global economic factors and pandemic *cough*) and you’re a strong player, companies will figure out a way to take care of you. It costs more to lose someone good if there are hiccups!
This is how some start ups operate, which is work people like sales people.
What you have to ask yourself is, do you believe in their product/service? Do they actually have a good product? How competitive are they? What is their differentiation? What makes them specialt?
Over 90% of start ups fail. Don’t let the potential seduce you.
Read carefully what, how and when they will pay you a share of the revenue? Is it immediate or when they hit a certain threshold or profitability? Because start ups take years or most likely never become profitable before selling or going public.
Start ups do this to seduce people and get cheap labor by selling this dream and then squeeze them dry by selling the start up hustle and dream of working insanely long hours for the promise of a big pay day. But it’s only the owners, senior executives and investors that get paid.
If you are young and you truly believe in the start up then go for it. But if you are not then build your career have some patience. Your field is in very high demand at agencies and brands.
