Has anyone successfully negotiated a title change in an in-house position? How did you go about it? I’m the sole in-house lawyer for a company of nearly 1,000 people. My title makes it sound like my role is limited to one type of law, but I handle all of my company’s legal issues. I have been working at the company for 3 years and my role keeps expanding, but the higher ups don’t seem motivated to give me title change that reflects my actual duties.

GC seems more applicable based on what you’ve said. I would negotiate using the argument that you are dealing with more than just the contracts and go into detail of all the different things you do

like

Yes I have done this on behalf of candidates, telling the company that such and such title is reflective of the level of work in the industry to peers. Counsel is completely reasonable!

like

Do you advise the Board? If not, maybe something more like Chief Legal Counsel?

like

Indirectly. I advise them through the C-Suite.

Yes, I put together a small “portfolio” of business points supporting an argument that I deserved a title promotion. I pushed my manager to consider a title promotion in connection with my next scheduled performance/ salary review and gave a lot of notice that it was important to me, so he could take my document to the business stakeholders with a stake in the decision. I was able to get it approved

like

Head of Legal works.

Also...why have you waited 3 years to ask? Whyyyyyyyyy!

like

So...please understand your worth and go somewhere you are valued.

What is your title now, and what do you want it to be? I personally like GC, but as a principal at my firm I could give myself any title I want.

Writing correspondence to outside parties not related to contracts with the title, “contracts lawyer” is quite strange. I also represent my company at GC meetings, where everyone is supposed to be a GC.

To put it bluntly, I know certain people with less experience and a lower performance rating are getting paid more than me due to my role working with payroll data. I suspect this was due to the fact that I did not counter offer when I accepted this role, which was a few months ago, and now I regret it.

Lets us discuss why Indian companies expects/forces/ us to work more than 9 hours but in timesheet we have to fill 8.
Managers schedule meeting after office hours and expects us to be available always.

Sorry to say this but I have seen only Indians who work extra hours. What's even funny is that the upper management laugh at foreigners who work exactly 8hours.

Should we not change our mentality?
What should we do to not follow this anymore?

If you practice collections in-house, what do you earn and do you receive a bonus?

I have practiced for five years and make $121k as an employee of a financial services company. As the only attorney, I oversee all statewide collections efforts, from demand letter to garnishment, with a case volume of nearly 7k new cases per year, of which the majority I end up litigating. I receive only a $1k bonus per year. Is my compensation fair? My last insurance defense gig was $75k.

Currently working on a three person team in a larger GC group. I lateraled from a different group that did not pay attorneys on an attorney scale. I’m stuck in my old pay scale but have gotten promotions and raises quickly with more on the horizon. They also indicate the preferred stock price is $6 and preferred stock equity is $188k (whatever that means). They are in the middle of a new financing and valuation round.
