Has anyone tried negotiating less work for the same pay? It seems wild, I know. But, I’m intrigued by this idea that I saw somewhere. If it worked, how did you frame it?

I have not. But I did negotiate a 4-day work week for only 10% pay reduction which means that I'm technically making more per hour!

like

Okay!! That’s awesome

Oh for sure, I'd just walk in their and say I want to make the same amount of money but do a lot less, and then just stare at them HARD and right in the eyes until they say yes.

OR you could tell them that instead of a 5% raise you want to work 5% less, and do that each year for the rest of your career until you retire in exactly 20 years.

Which did you try? HAHA

No but stop volunteering for work and it will eventually taper

That is one way to do it!

Just work your wage, or less if you can get away with it! Isn’t that the basic idea anyway? Do as little as possible and just collect your paycheck, without getting kicked to the curb? Doesn’t seem like going above and beyond leads to raises, just more work!

like

Yes. That seems to be the goal of most people now. I haven’t gotten to that place yet…

I am a huge proponent on telling my higher ups that I am not buying into this new generation of goal oriented pay structures where you're expected to do more & more work each year just to achieve a cost of living raise. No wonder we're living in a society where so many are exhausted, burnt out, & constantly feeling like that cannot keep up. It was likely some marketing genius who originally thought of this grand plan to make employees generate over arching "goals" every year & require they must attain those, on top of additional ones that are rolled out by upper management and then let's not forget to throw in all of the DEI/ENG groups one needs to belong to and volunteer even more valuable time towards being a part of. It's nothing but a popularity contest which is almost embarrassing to say the least. Earning a fair pay increase is now structured so that it's just barely within reach for most employees to achieve unless they're devoting the largest majority of their time to their jobs. I got hired for a position with set duties. Show up daily, do those duties extremely well and that is all that should be done to expect to be compensated fairly for it. Earning more each year is called keeping up with inflation. Do not try selling me on any other 'MLM' type pay structure and expect me to stay because I'm not buying it.

Usually once I'm done saying all of that they're left fairly speechless. I've continued to receive raises each year and abate receiving additional duties!

Can you come speak to my manager on my behalf, please? Hah!

I am willing to bet that this has never happened in the history of employer/employee relationships.

All the way back to the oldest profession. Can you imagine she says to a regular "a hundred bucks 'll get you a hug now, sweetie."

Probably 4 10-hour days to still make up a 40 hour work week. Lower stress can make a job seem easier, and make one feel more content.

I've turned down promotions that didn't offer enough compensation in exchange for the added responsibilities. Can't say I've ever actively negotiated for fewer responsibilities, though. I'm not sure how you'd broach this conversation without sounding entitled.

I’m wondering if I should think about doing that. I’ll have to think of what number will make it worth more work..

I haven’t tried that

Additional Posts in Salary Negotiations

Hi all. I just received an offer for $130k and will be eligible for about 29,000 shares of stock options. The vesting schedule is 1 year and then quarterly thereafter.

Can someone explain what this means? I “will be eligible”. So, I have to buy the shares? Should I be asking at what price?

Newbie here. Please help!

When I negotiated my comp, all my discussions were around me being a junior and I only accepted my comp for that reason (would not have accepted if I was step above junior since it was low). Negotiations happened with HR, but my offer letter and documents never mention junior (but I have proof from HR saying I am a junior). How do I approach this with my boss as I’m not sure she’s aware I’m actually technically a junior? Revolving around asking for a move up + raise

Interviewing at a dream company, and right from the first interview the recruiter told me we are way off on salary expectations. This was a little bit expected, as the role is requiring a few years less experience than I have and also in a much cheaper market. They already told me the salary range during this first call, but wondering if they like me enough and I get an offer, how I might approach negotiating for more. I would be making much less than I do now, but it is a dream company.

I’m interviewing with a startup and the range has a 40k difference from the lowest to highest point. It’s also pre-seed and comes with equity, and health, 401k benefits. It’s a director of sales role so I would eventually be recruiting and managing a team along with building the processes and strategy. What would you consider a fair compensation package? If they offer me something on the lower end of the range, is it still appropriate to counter with an offer that is over their stated range?

I was approached on LinkedIn for an early career recruiting role in DFW, TX. I don't have direct experience, but I have the university experience/connections from working in career services. This is the first time I've considered work outside of higher education. I said my salary expectations are minimum $90k and that didn't seem to be an issue. Am I asking too little, too much? How can I know I'm getting the best salary and not just settling at the low end of the range?

I’ve been approached my by company that one of our large clients (who im currently project managing for) is looking for a consultant of sorts, and if they hire us, I’d be the first person asked to take on this consultant role. This isn’t something my company typically offers and would greatly change the scope of my role. Has anyone ever taken on a role like this? If so, were you able to negotiate a percentage of the consulting fee? Or was it a bump in salary during the project?

I’m interviewing for a marketing manager role at a company based in SF. I’m genuinely excited about the role and the company but we’ve yet to discuss salary. I expect to be asked at some point, but my research has given me a VERY broad range. So I’m here to do a bit more research. I’ve got 5 very relevant years of experience and will have an associate manager directly reporting to me. Are there any marketers out there who can share their salaries in similar regions and experience levels?
