Have any of you had trouble getting interviews at startups due to them wanting more startup experience? I've worked on many greenfield projects for clients and more mature projects, so I'm not sure why I wouldn't be a good candidate. The funny thing is when you look at the bios for some of these founders and see just how inexperienced many of them are. One's bio was basically the list of clubs he belonged to in college.

I’ve found a lot of startups are really bad at hiring. Hiring is often being done by people who have never worked anywhere else, let alone hired or managed a team before, so they don’t know what to look for in potential candidates. I think that’s part of what has led to some insane interview requirements or expectations.

like

Startups are unpredictable. If one hates you for a specific thing, the next one will love you for that same exact thing. Just find the one that is in love with you. And maybe skip the one with a college clubs bio 😂

If you're truly wanting to get into a startup you almost have to play the field of who you're going to be working for / interviewing with. Due diligence on the hiring team before interviewing is important so you understand what they're looking for. It sounds like you've got decent experience. That being said, what has you looking into working for a startup?

like

Basically to do interesting work. Also, I think the experience would come in handy if/when I decide to start a company.

I’ve had similar interview experiences - Sometimes very disconnected from the rest of the world and only living in their unicorn bubble

like

They want people who can afford 24/7 work with low cash compensation but giant “equity” grants. Unless you’ve worked in a startup, you really don’t know the grind, in exchange for a “moonshot” and an inflated title. But all the kombucha you can drink on tap!

But then again, there’s all these 28 year old millionaires with “ex early Uber” in their linked in titles looking for executive level positions.

It varies a lot from startup to startup. I got hired for an APM role with only two interviews, one with the CEO and the other with the CPOO (straight out of college, got lucky). Make sure to do your due diligence on the team, if you land at a place with an inexperienced team and a horrible culture then it won’t be pleasant.

On to your fit, I work at a venture builder and we specialize in early ventures and innovation. It’s very different from working on mature projects, but as long as you read up on it and have genuine passion for them then I can’t see how you can’t get a bite. Check out Strategyzer for the very early stuff, if you’re keen.

Ha, not a typo: they’re the Chief Product and Operations Officer. Online until 10PM everyday, don’t know how they do it.

This is interesting - I felt like I had the opposite experience where I was less competitive because I wasn't coming on from a FAANG, so therefore it wasn't a coup/recruitment highlight to say look what this person left to come join us! In general, I've found that startup hiring culture is pretty weird. Due diligence is deffo important, but it's hard to gauge culture until you're actually there which is why I'm trying to steer clear in my current job search

Did you have previous startup experience? I feel like both are highly desired by startups, FAANG and startup experience. I understand that startups have to be really picky about who they bring on, it's just annoying when they shoot people down due to such spurious reasons as have little startup experience. Lots of founders, including unicorn founders, wouldn't have hired their former selves.

Cold applied for an awesome role, had an interview with hiring manager, recruiter, and given a pretty hefty assignment that I’m really proud of nailing. They followed up with an email asking for 4-5 days that I am available for a full day of interviews. Gave them 4-5 days, started planning for how I’d get those days off work during insane times at current job, and now not a single word from them to confirm a date. Been over a week now. Sad. Pretty jaded. What can I do? Already followed up

Hi! I have a quick question and could use some advice:

I have 1 job offer that is an hour away and pays 45k, after negotiations (Research Associate Position at a University) .

I have just interviewed for a position closer to home and a base salary of 65k, but haven’t heard back from them in about 2 days (He said he would make a decision by yesterday and I’ve reached out).
I have to decide on the first offer by Thursday but I haven’t heard back from the second yet. Thoughts on next move?

Some Business Intelligence/Analyst roles are very data heavy. I wonder why these roles do not have the term “data” in them, and wonder if it’s to keep the salary lower than it should be. I have colleagues doing intense data science tasks as BI Analysts, and can’t help but feel indignant on their behalf because when hearing their job title, one would underestimate their technical ability.
