Ideally you want to do some research on what the average is for that position in your town and for a company that size. Before your interview, I’ve been told to say something along the lower end of it just so that you can have a chance at interviewing. If they make an offer, you want to thank them and express your excitement for the opportunity to work there but ask if they’re open to negotiating pay. You can ask what range they’re expecting to pay and they should tell you. That’s when you say that based on your experience and skills, you feel it should be in the higher range. If they don’t budge, see if you can work out your benefits, like maybe an extra week off etc.. good luck!

When I switch jobs it’s usually because my current employer isn’t paying mkt rate, so I figure out what market rate is for the role and ask for the top end of the range
I would personally tell them what you are currently making at your current job because that will open the door for negotiating something more desirable. You don’t want to give them a huge figure otherwise, they’ll move onto someone else. Hope this helps!
I agree, I did this, and they tried to undercut me further. I kept trying to explain I’d be taking a 5 k pay cut - they told me I should be grateful to work for them… so always know your worth and plus 5
It takes a bunch of research and networking on your part to understand first how much the role pays in your area and then with your experience and abilities. You might be looking for more money, and there’s nothing wrong with that, or you might be looking for something else. I’ve taken a pay cut to get away from a horrible company or manager.
I always saw best practice as giving a range with your desired as the 25% point, assuming a modest market salary desire, for your experience level.
