Hello everyone,

I just got the offer from Oliver Wyman from non-target school, non-business , finance, accounting background, low-GPA, no supreme ppt excel experience. (Assuming I was really lucky to get the offer given that I even failed the interview at other big4 firms)

Whilst I am so excited to join the firm, I am a bit anxious about whether or not I could survive in the competitive environment.

Could anyone please give me a piece of advice about how to survive junior consultant?

Hey fork, I wouldn’t be worried

You will be fine.

OW does not often make hiring mistakes. You were hired for your capability to learn and think critically, not for your existing skills.

However, do not call your colleagues forks.

like

You’re there to learn, not to lead streams and produce slides that decide direction on projects. Don’t try super hard to impress people with your work hours and sending emails after hours on the weekend. Communicate well, and enjoy your time.

I identify as a spoon, so you’re already starting on the wrong foot. You got an offer for a reason. People are firms greatest assets in consulting. You’ll get training, you’ll get mentorship, you’ll evolve as a consultant in the job. Trust the process, and enjoy learning along the way. Don’t be afraid to try new things just to avoid making mistakes.

Wood spork here - good luck!

like

You will be fine. OW is all about protecting CCG and destroying experienced hires.

like

Could you elaborate please

Show ownership. My biggest issue as a manager are junior staff who think it's my role to tell them verbatim every word that goes in every box of every slide. If you're given a task, clarify the ask. As you work, pay attention to detail - simple things like typos and formatting are things you should always get right. Reach out to peers on the team and proactively set up time with your supervisor(s) to review.

I'll go out of my way to coach and mentor someone who shows initiative as described above.

like

Don't take criticism personal unless it is actually personal (e.g. someone calls you stupid - which is obviously 100% not acceptable). Your slides, analysis and even emails will constantly be reviewed, criticized and revised and reviewed and criticized some more. It's the norm, not a testament to the quality of your work.

OW is a good firm. They like you and hired you because you are good. Time to wake up and smell the roses.

I’m an AP with a masters degree from a second tier European university and I have been fine.

Thank you very much for your kind words!

I was super excited about the offer but as time goes by, I was getting scared so your words gave me such a relief!

Think strategically about the skills and experience you acquire. Listen carefully. Pay attention to who are the influencers within the organization.

How did you do on the OW cases?

By adding this, one of the reasons interviewer liked my approach is not to follow simple framework people are trying to memorize and instead I tried to give more deep hypothesis for the case topic.

I think many applicants tend to rely too much on the framework instead of thinking about ‘the central issue’ of the topic.

That makes me differentiate from other candidates. Also I have math backgrounds with some academic research experience that might give a good impression of being able to handle quantitative and analytical mindset.

Hope this helps!

I'm SVP/strategy for a PR agency. I moved into PR, Healthcare, and Strategic Planning only 3 years ago. An agency recruiter is trying to convince me to move into a GSVP account role, assuring me "at that level it's all strategy." (I dont think she understands the words she's using. Or that I'm qualified). But long-term, knowing account roles are so much more plentiful than brand planning in PR, I'm wondering if I should start thinking about account. Anyone here moved from strategy to account?

Some Business Intelligence/Analyst roles are very data heavy. I wonder why these roles do not have the term “data” in them, and wonder if it’s to keep the salary lower than it should be. I have colleagues doing intense data science tasks as BI Analysts, and can’t help but feel indignant on their behalf because when hearing their job title, one would underestimate their technical ability.
