Hello! I just passed the patent bar a couple of months ago so I'm applying to my first patent agent roles. However, I only have a masters in law, not a JD, so I have no summer associate experience, and every position wants experience first. How did some of you other patent agents get your first positions if you've never worked in a law firm before? Any advice or suggestions would be greatly appreciated, thank you so much!

Thank you so much!! :D

Hi, first, congrats on passing the patent bar. Second, I would suggest looking at IP boutique firms for patent agent or technical specialists roles. Working for IP boutique firm would be the one of the best place to start because they are usually more hands on. Hopes this helps.

So I recently got a job offer that is satisfactory— I wouldn’t mind taking it, but I have to reply within three days. The thing is, I have a two other companies that I’m really interested in (ideally first and second choice) but I’m on the 1st round of interviews with one company and the 2nd round with another, and I’m not sure if I can speed up the process that fast. Does anyone have any advice in this scenario? Should I just take the offer that I have? Or risk it and turn it down?

Should I renege offer from MBB?

An MBA recent grad. I signed with MBB last year. However, I have always wanted to do tech PM. I couldn’t find PM job in Fall and just signed MBB offer I have. I recently got an FAANG offer. It’s PM function, hard to break in with consulting experience. I declined the new offer during interview stage and again after they gave me initial offer, but it is coming back with 80k more in annual compensation. It made me so torn!! Should I renege MBB offer?

Is it the smart move to take a pay cut and clerk for a judge?

Little context: I was an ED student, full time paralegal/clerk throughout my law school experience, and a single mother. I did not take advantage of the law school extracurriculars and missed out on clerk application deadlines my final year (2020). Would it benefit me to take a pay cut as a transactional clerk by about $20k to work as a clerk for a year then re-enter firm life? I’m transactional and enjoy that line of work.

Got an offer at a great company. Ive done this job before but moved away from it because it burnt me out because of the people and it scarred me. I have found out i have ptsd from it and am scared to start the new one. Been working on ptsd thru therapy. I know its a great firm and a great opportunity but my ptsd is bad. Another company last wk reached out same field diff role more chill and behind the scenes and i cant help but think about the easy way out over the challenge and better future.

What are thoughts on EY. They have called me and want to chat with me about taking over a service line in my city. I am at a top 10 firm now and is my second stop as a partner in PA. I don’t want to be constantly moving firms but opportunities keep coming up at larger and larger shops. No prior B4 experience so needing a little insight if it is worth it.

How do you handle feeling bad for inconveniencing juniors? I’m a third year and got tasked at 7 PM last night (Saturday) with handling an emergency, which included staffing first years. I emailed all first years and asked for help if they were available. None of them were free, so I did it myself. I am the senior underwriting for a real estate company. I am negotiating my bonus structure with my employer. It is going to be based on the size of deal we close with an option to roll it/a portion of it into the deal. What is a normal % to ask for? The typical deal size is $80m-$100m. It seems like they want to do it in tranches, meaning up to x I’ll get a smaller percentage, up to y I’ll get a larger %, etc. I’ve never had a deal based bonus structure, so I’m totally lost here. Thanks!
