Hey everyone! Question on how you manage concious spending plans: do you have separate checking accounts for going out, groceries, etc. if so how do you handle credit cards? Do you subtract the money for each category account when you pay a credit card bill? Seems so complex. Is there anyway to simplify (note: we are a couple with joint accounts)

50 percent of my paycheck goes straight to savings via direct deposit. I spend the rest freely.

Just use a tool to budget and track... Mint, Personal Capital, or YNAB

I don’t have separate checking accounts but so try to consciously stick to a budget. I review the budget every few months and try to identify areas of lifestyle creep

like

I use YNAB and yes, anything spent out of any account (credit, checking, etc) gets recorded to the appropriate category.

For any of you real estate investors, what tools or sources did you learn from when getting started. Can’t find a mentor currently so want to find some highly recommended books or videos. If focused on the tri-state area (NY, NJ, Long Island mainly) that would be even better. My hope is to buy and rent out a apartment while also owning a house and house hacking that by renting part of it out. Trying to understand all the steps, traps, and how to find if it’s a good investment.

Will I ever get over my poverty mindset?

I grew up very poor. I get extreme anxiety and shame when I spend money above $20. Deep down I feel like I should scrounge and save every penny. I use bath towels that are 10 years old and threadbare cause I can't bring myself to buy a "luxury item" despite making oodles of money and have a ton saved and invested.

Anyone else get over this?

Also, are there any provisions you’d consider absolutely crucial from the owner’s side?
