Hey, fellow Recruiters, what is your biggest pet peeve you come across when reviewing resumes? For me, it’s when people list Microsoft Word as a special skill. That’s not a special skill, if you have completed the 6th grade you know how to use Microsoft Word.

You should advise career counselors and resume writers of that, since they've told me that I should include that on my resume.

Keep it on there. ✅ it's a skill.

Honestly, if you had worked with some of the people I have, you'd start believing knowing how to use Word is a special skill lol. I get what you mean, though, it should just be standard at this point.

100% this 🤣 I'm a technosaurus. Computers were only a thing in UK schools from 1986. I went into the airline industry for 20 years and didn't ever use MS tools until 2010. Plus I have adhd and suck at learning Anything techie. You youngsters are used to it.

Lots of job ads ask for that (or Google suite knowledge) so don't be surprised to see that on CVs. I.literally just applied for a job that asked for that. It's not a skill I have but hey ho 🤣

I don’t have Word on there but I do have Office, just because it’s listed as a requirement on so many job postings and I am trying to get past the ATS filters. Sorry it’s your peeve but like…we didn’t choose this life

Listing it as a special skill feels a bit like stating the obvious. For me, one of my biggest pet peeves is when resumes are just a big old wall of text with no formatting or organization. Like, give me some bullet points, some bolded headers, anything to break up the monotony!

Trigger: rare illness post birth

Just sharing that I was diagnosed with postpartum preeclampsia 3 days after giving birth despite not having risk factors or preeclampsia in my pregnancy. Sharing as I had absolutely no idea about this illness.

Main things to do are check your BP everyday at least the first ten days after you give birth, and go to hospital if it's very high (over 160/110). If you get severe headache or stomach ache then also be vigilant.

Happy to answer any questions!

Cold applied for an awesome role, had an interview with hiring manager, recruiter, and given a pretty hefty assignment that I’m really proud of nailing. They followed up with an email asking for 4-5 days that I am available for a full day of interviews. Gave them 4-5 days, started planning for how I’d get those days off work during insane times at current job, and now not a single word from them to confirm a date. Been over a week now. Sad. Pretty jaded. What can I do? Already followed up

I’ve noticed that HR, when explaining why a candidate didn’t get the job, tend to lean on “You’re great, but we had candidates with more experience in [skill relevant to the job].” I do believe this is true in some cases, but it can’t possibly be for all of them.

HR folks — what feedback have you obscured by offering that line instead?

I’m reviewing my resume getting ready to start my job search and have a question for recruiters, hiring managers. I’m looking for a role brand-side not agency side. Specialist roles aside, such as digital, when you see someone describing themselves as a “generalist marketer” is this a resume you’d pass on? My past roles have been such that I do a lot of marketing projects, tasks etc. but I’m not a specialist. I’m worried if I use this terminology I won’t even be considered for a role. Thank you
