Hey folks can someone tell me why I can’t land an interview in IB but my lesser counterparts could? I currently work in WM as an an analyst at a BB. But I’m a recent grad, 3.6 GPA at a reputable private school in Boston, author, helped manage school’s endowment, involved student athlete, financial modeling and valuation certification, and still couldn’t get 1 interview. I am of color and you can know it from my name, but I’d like to think that has nothing to do with what I want for my career.

Idk who u mean by “lesser counterparts” but maybe they’re just networking more aggressively than you are. Are you just applying to openings on LinkedIn / company websites? Your luck with that channel will
Be slim tbh. There’s a lot of existing IB analysts looking to lateral so naturally a bank will take preference over them vs you despite the BB title. Why not try networking internally and see if you can get a shoe in into a group? You can probably join a smaller less reputable bank as an analyst but a BB is the best experience you can get.

I had an excel of all alum / connections of connections who I would reach out to periodically when openings were up at their shops. Sent over 100 emails since I’m from a non target school. My name is also very foreign, it’s more about the work experience and the networking.

Letting ‘them play the ego game’ is probably hurting your chances. The interviewer needs to hear about you to actually be able to provide feedback ‘ evaluate you for the role. If you don’t provide him/her with content they can evaluate, that doesn’t help them form an opinion. Doesn’t mean you ramble on when you answer - everyone appreciates crisp and to-the-point answers.

There is A LOT that goes into it… experience/skills, relationships, some luck, everything has to be right because they will not miss a beat. There are other factors too… are you looking at the right IBs? Have you been reaching out to people at those firms? Where are you applying geographically? How long have you been applying?

For some perspective, I studied Finance at a large university, had certifications/trainings, internships in investing and M&A, etc and it still took over a year

Also be flexible wrt geography and “prestige”. The hardest part is getting in the door.

Analysts and associates are dropping like it’s Stalingrad. My guess is that the lateral hire market will slacken a little once people are back in offices, but finawwwwwwwnce took another big hit in terms of attractiveness to new grads.

Fewer grads means less fresh meat for the grinder, means more leverage for the jr bankers who actually want to be there.

He took resume to HR actual and said I’d hear from them. Haven’t heard anything week or so later.

Haven’t texted VP much as I don’t want to be creeper but really interested. Not sure how to engage at this point. At some level it seemed like a home run.
