Hey guys, I need some guidance/advice on severance packages. After 5 years at the small boutique agency where I am at, my boss and I decided it is time for me to part ways as they are not able to provide the growth for me that I want. They offered me 1 month of severance. I thought the standard was 2 weeks per year. Does anyone have any guidance or advice here? Also I want to mention that I brought the agency massive PR and 15+ awards including best global campaign. Thanks!!

It sounds like this is voluntary on your part. If that's the case, you're not really entitled to anything.

like

Honestly there isn’t really a standard in the agency world. I’d be pretty happy with a month. Doesn’t hurt to ask for more though, especially if you tell them you’re available to answer transition questions during that time.

like

Honestly? Because you’re parting ways voluntarily rather than being laid off, that severance is not mandatory and was in fact pretty damn thoughtful.

Larger holding companies tend to have stronger guidance around severance (x amount for x years) but note “tend” not “must.” You can always negotiate for more, no harm in that.

like

There’s no law here or something to protect you. Some people negotiate severance terms into contract, especially at the senior level. But if you don’t have that your options are: 1) find out how much they have paid others in severance. Ask those people how much they got. Even if they were only there 2 years and got 2 weeks, you could cite that as a kind of precedent and in the spirit of equity you can ask for the same (so 5 weeks for you. 2) ask for more (2 weeks per year is about as much as is reasonable in this case) and appeal to them in the sense that you are planning this together, you are supporting the transition on a timeline that helps the company not have issues, etc.

like

Unfortunately everyone above is right. There really isn't a standard. And because you are leaving voluntarily they are doing a favor to you by providing you anything at all.

like

Not to sound like one of those people, but you're probably very lucky to get the 1 month. This might be the first time in a while that I've heard of anything related to a severance package.

like

What Accenture1 said. There's usually no severance if you resign. Do you work in America? I'd take that as a win.

Not giving you raises or promotions is not the same thing as effective dismissal, so you wouldn’t be entitled to any severance.

That said, usually if you push back, most companies will give you another 2 weeks or a month on top of your severance offer to avoid any legal headaches.

Just wanted to brag a little. This may not be much for some but I’m super excited. I graduated with a B.A in chemistry July 2022 and I start my job this Monday with a salary of 60K!
