First, congrats on (a) the baby and (b) your new job. You obviously don't need advice on the birds and bees, so we'll just look at your upcoming maternity leave. I hope your new employer isn't caught by surprise that their new assistant vice president will be on paid leave in the near future. If they don't know yet, tell the as soon as possible. Maternity leave is usually offered effective immediately with your hiring. Some companies have a one-year delay for that benefit, specifically to avoid this kind of situation. The best advice I can give you is to impress the hell out of 'em for the next six months, take your maternity leave, take care of yourself and the baby, rest and relax, then come back and act like you never left.

Congrats!! I’d also look into if you are eligible for paid leave - some companies have rules like “must be an employee for a year to be eligible for paid leave”
Thanks a lot both! It’s been exciting and nerve-racking at the same time. I already let my company know the day I signed the offer letter to avoid any surprises from either end.
I did look into the maternity leave policy. It does say I need to complete 12 months to be eligible, not sure if that means I can delay my leave or just won’t have any.
On that note, how long of a short-term leave is usually provided/ usually taken?
Ask HR if you can use your paid sick leave days and personal/vacation PTO. In my experience, companies usually had 5-10 sick days per year and 2-3 weeks of vacation time. You would be looking at 3-5 weeks of paid leave if that's the case, but you wouldn't have any other paid time off for the rest of the year.
Understood. I’ll meet up with the HR and see what works out. Again, thanks so much!
Congrats on your new job!! Do you qualify for your company’s maternity leave? I always wondered how that works if you are already pregnant when you start
I think I qualify for maternity leave only if I’ve worked at the firm for 12months. But I still have to get the details from my HR. But in a general sense, I think so?
You don't have to spill all the details right away, but it's a good idea to have an open and honest conversation with your manager or HR about your situation and any accommodations you might need down the line.
