Short answer, yes.
I experienced this also and it ultimately ended with me separating from my SO. I had got to the point where I thought I had a mental illness of my own. Since leaving, I am much better.

I totally agree but some people (myself) often feel compelled to take on other people’s problems, oftentimes unconsciously. I do believe it requires some professional help.

Legally, no. That’s just them being stupid. That said, this doesn’t sound like a great relationship, and may lead to abuse later if this behavior escalates.
