Yes girl! The fact that you already do the major function of the job adequately is huge. Also it is to your advantage to go for it since this is a brand new role and you get to define what good enough is.
If I were you, I would take the job but find ways to delegate the grunt work and make it so you can set boundaries for WLB, which is possible because this role did not previously exists.
Also make sure you get a say in who your replacement is if you’ll be relying on that person to do your new job.
Good luck.
Additionally, I was promoted into my current position only a year and a half ago. I am flattered that he recommended me. I definitely have imposter syndrome so I was very surprised that he even thought to mention me to our Executive Director. Should I go forward with formally applying despite not meeting all listed qualifications?
Yes! Apply! Show what you are doing and your education. Your director wouldn’t suggest this if he didn’t think you were ready or had the skills to rock the role.
You shouldn’t fit all the boxes. This is why you grow into these positions. Once the box gets tight, then look for another area to grow.
It might be a stretch, but that is how we build our muscles.
Thanks for your advice everyone! Your comments are so encouraging. PL1 is right. The worst that can happen is that I’m not offered the job, but at the very least leadership will know that I’m a top performer and open to advancing. I will definitely apply.
Remember the worst thing that can happen is that they say no.
But you are already filling a needed gap. This is just the next step (and get paid for it).
GET IT!!!!!
Yes! Definitely apply. The years experience (even in a research context) is flexible. Also, if you don’t get it, you’ll still get a ton of valuable insight into what interviews at that level look like.
Plus, often when someone tells you you should apply, it’s because they want to give you the role (had this earlier in my career and got some amazing experience from it).
I don't think I'd worry too much about the desired years of experience, I went for a position that required 3-5 years experience but was at my job for 7 months with only that 7 months of experience when I applied and got it. Good luck.
Most requirements are suggestions and highlight the perfect candidate on paper. Unless it is a requirement to perform the job like an MD treating a patient it is not as important as someone seeing your value or your life experience.
