I need to showcase if I am a right fit for the role for next 2-3 months before they formally take me onboard for the role. It will be needed so that “there is enough time given to train and learning curve and I am not set up for failure”.
What does that mean? I am very confused. If they had not made up their mind, why was I given the impression that I will be an obvious candidate for the position. I have already waited for 6 months , is it really worth waiting for 2-3 months more?
I am loosing motivation to work honestly, thinking what is the point!
Thank you! Totally agreed.
This might just be what they need to do to check the boxes of their internal process. It sounds like they're being formal about it, but that doesn't mean they were lying to you.
You can go back and ask "Our previous conversations made it clear I was being promoted I to this role. Can you explain what the training is needed for, if you're already sure I'm a good fit?"
If this is a jump with some new responsibilities, like you weren't managing before but now you are, it makes sense that they'd want to give you some training. I don't think that's the problem here. However it sounds like they're asking you to do this work as part of the training subroutine paying you the salary for that role. So if you're okay accepting the training, you can instead ask "Since I'll be performing the responsibilities of the new role as part of this training, when will I see the increased pay for that work? Will it start when I start or will I be paid retroactively once the love is finalized?" A good employer will pay you properly for the work you perform, and training isn't exempt from compensation.
I did ask questions on the similar lines. I was told because I am currently looking at one vertical of things and the promotion will lead to additional responsibilities, they want to see if I can take up more work. Mind you, I have been very vocal about additional work so that I can continue to get exposure but was never given before. Now just before the decision, the hiring manager is thinking of lack of exposure to different vertical. Infact today he/she mentioned that its a miss on my part, I should have given you more exposure there but it would be better if you get experience first.
Also, to answer your question, no retrospective financial impact. Same pay, more responsibility for now.
They sound like they are on the fence. You are probably a stop-gap for them while they are looking for someone else. I suggest you don’t wait to start looking for something else.
I understand your frustration. If they haven’t seen the reason why you should be promoted, then this is a bad sign. Why would they even post the position when you are next in line. Red flags. Please look for another job so that in that 2/3months, you’d have options. All the best.
