Hi 👋 anyone knows if companies has the right to spy (use camera, recording, etc) on us on our home work station? (I am asking cuz I have two old monitors from my old firm but they insist that I should use their monitors instead)

Unlikely they are going to want to filter through video or audio recordings to see what your doing. But with that said there is software to monitor idle time, key stokes, websites, etc that are much easier to use automation to filter through that companies can use to “monitor” employees.

likesmart

If so, I’m breaking the microphone and camera.

funny

You could join calls from your work phone for audio and use an external web cam you control when needed

Oh yeah buddy. They have you monitored, recorded watched on a 24/7 surveillance watch. Ya better sleep with one eye open cause the feds are gonna come and SNATCH you right up

like

So I have switched firm and no longer in KPMG if that’s why you so sarcastic

funny

Spy? That’s probably the wrong word to use. They can literally detect your keystrokes,so I doubt they waste time watching you work. Why are you concerned? Are you up to something nefarious?

like

“Why yes, I don’t mind being recorded and filmed by my employer. What are you? Some kind of weirdo?”

likefunny

Yes. If you're using company equipment they're perfectly capable of viewing your screens, camera, etc.

like

I put a post it over mine. A company post it.

likefunny

It depends on the state. It's illegal in some states if they don't have your consent.

like

Agreed - looking at what is on your computer perfectly fine.

Recording through your camera? That’s a criminal act in MA. Doubt any large employer is doing that. Little payoff for a massive criminal liability if found.

Edit: to be clear - every employer should operate on the assumption that your employer has access to anything you’ve accessed on a work device. I just wouldn’t worry they’re recording you. That’s a legal nightmare scenario for the employer.

likefunny

Just use an external Webcam and leave any cord coming out of the monitor except for the Power & HDMI/DP Cable unplugged from your Docking Station.

like

They can definitely monitor what sites you visit and how often youre on the computer but ofc, there are ways around that too

like

Why would they care what monitor you use

Sometimes it’s because their IT support systems for remote employees need to be familiar with your equipment in the case that something doesn’t function properly.

likefunny

I’d read your contract to double check.

Looking for advice on defending depositions. I am a first year associate and am defending my first deposition next week. I reviewed the prior transcripts from this case, and there were objections to what seemed like proper questions. Is there a strategic reason to object beyond improper form? For example, if my client is asked something that could be harmful (or at least make us look bad), should I just object? Very worried this transcript will be ex. I am seeing too many post about awards like rising star, Kudos, etc. People keep telling there managers recommended them for these awards.

How do you cope when your employer rapidly descends into chaos from the top down? Today is my 2yr anniversary with this company. In the past 6mos, they have repeatedly changed directions / goals, pushing out several supportive and productive managers in favor of a single chauvinist overlord who makes HR violations daily and does no actual work. HR denies every complaint made against him and he retaliates to the point of firing people. Very hostile. How do I survive until I find my next gig?

A coworker (diff depts) and I realized we live in the same neighborhood after running into each other on the street. We started talking more in the office and he ended one convo with “we should get drinks sometime”. I gave him my number via slack and said to hit me up when he wants to get together. Hadn’t heard from him in a couple weeks then connected him to my friend who works for a company he’s trying to sell to. Then he asked if I’d set him up with my friend :( think I have any chance?
