Hi fellow mental health professionals, I am curious to see if you guys think my salary is fair. My position is primary clinician/therapist. I work at an inpatient rehab. I am making $27 an hour $56,160 per year before taxes. I have 5 years experience in mental health, bachelors in Human Services, and 1 year away from completing my graduate degree in Clinical Mental Health Counseling . I would be happier if I were in the 30 per hour range. Please tell me your thoughts!

Hi, in my state you are not allowed to have a title of Therapist until you have earned a a masters degree and licensed. 56,000 for a Bachelors is good. Once you earn your Master’s and licensed your income increase and can be unlimited. Keep going, get your graduate degree and license and expect your salary to increase.

I was not aware of any states allowing unlicensed therapists, so I think you’re getting a good salary. I received less as a fully licensed therapist.

like

What state? For only 5 years experience a bachelors in human services I'd say that is a pretty great salary. As someone already said most states you cant call yourself a therapist unless licensed.
I was a coordinator at a dual diagnosis inpatient center with bsw private pay. 45k Florida

I agree with all above comments, but wanted to add my experience as well. I am a licensed social worker working toward clinical licensure. Currently on my second year working for a community mental health agency making 48k, in Indiana.

like

All things considered that seems fair. I have my masters in clinical mental health counseling, 1/2 way to licensing, and 10 months experience: making $20/hr at a non profit agency. Does that make you feel better?

That’s pretty fair if not above average for a person in mental health with no license. Most of the newly licensed people I know with masters degrees are starting around 65-70k (hospital setting and billing/seeing patients with productivity expectations).

I’m a Bachelor level counselor. I’m making $43K a year. Seems fair. I’m also at an inpatient rehab in PA

Wow that is amazing. I was working as a masters level mental health clinician (unlicensed) and was only making $37,500 a year so I would say that is a pretty great salary for being unlicensed.

That is a really good salary . I have a masters degree, a CAADC and over 15 years experience and was only making 50000 a year working for a CMH until last year

1:1 with my boss, one of the areas of improvement was: “be more vocal”.

Being an immigrant who struggles a lot with the language barrier is just super hard to digest this. I do my best, he doesn’t know how hard is keeping a Google Translate tab open on my browser all day long, he doesn’t know when people look to you because you sound “funny”. Just wanted to vent it, and say for all the leaders out there, if you want us to be more vocal, give us a chance to be heard with our own voice and truth

How do you deal with imposter syndrome? I'm a new therapist and I work with a bunch of women who have been doing this for ages. They're all really sweet, but I can't help feeling like I'm way out of my league. I mostly see younger clients which I guess works in my favor, but I just feel like I'm totally incompetent compared to the women I work with.

Have you ever dealt with a colleague that believes in extremely (in my opinion) outdated or even just false claims and treats them as scientific facts? I work with several older men but one of them practices "provocative therapy" as in you just play the devil's advocate with your patient and side with the negative half of their thinking. In theory I could see this working situationally, but as a whole philosophy regardless of the patient's issue I think it's ridiculous.

I think there's this myth that therapists have all their own sh*t figured out, and for me at least I know that's far from true (hopefully it isn't just me). On the contrary, I think we should be leading by example!

Hello, I’m an LMSW in Michigan. I have 15 years of experience in the field as a clinician, supervisor, and an administrator. I am feeling burnt out and unsure of my future. I have worked mainly in the Community Mental Health and the VA Health systems, hence my fatigue. I’ve flirted with private practice work in the past, but my spouse has been worried about not having affordable healthcare and benefits that each system provides. Is it worth the jump? Am I overthinking things?
