Personally I feel it’s a quiet and/or dishonest expectation - they might say they don’t want you to work 24/7 but the number of communications I get when I am known to be out suggests otherwise.
No. Insurance defense and I set my boundaries. The only exception is usually trial prep situations. Otherwise I don’t know anyone at that office when I’m off 😂
Not at all (plaintiff side mass tort and PI). My firm has done a lot over the past few years to try to change the culture including hiring and elevating new partners who have done a lot to encourage work-life balance. Occasionally there might be a situation that requires me to be available after hours or stay late but that doesn’t happen very often. I would never be expected to work on holidays or during planned vacation time.
This sounds reasonable! Happy to hear management is actually managing. Good for you. Seems you’re in a good place.

No. Plaintiff PI. Small office. No overtime.

Nopeeeeee. I do Insurance Defense and with the exception of trial, once I hit 4PM, it’s my time.
I work in Insurance defense. My hours are 9-5 and that’s it. Only time you have to work overtime is for trial which doesn’t come up much. It’s very predictable schedule and there’s really no overtime
No, how is it a vacation? Put an automatic out of office reply on your email and give your manager as the next of contact, if the need something until you come back. Its not right to be bothered on your vacation. Americans are the only country that doesn't value vacation and time off.
Thank you but that doesn’t always work. We rarely get to take vacation. I have trouble with the expectation to be available and on call 24/7. I try to set boundaries. It’s just too difficult.
Yes!! I was working 9 hour days and no lunch break at my last firm. I was opening the office, closing the office and if I needed to take off for a doctor's appointment it was like I had just stolen from the firm. So I stopped u til I ended up needing emergency surgery and my firm told me I could work remotely. Then changed all my passwords and posted my position on indeed. Which was bizarre because the attorney had literally taken a full month off for their own issues, and I kept the doors open and food on their table.
No, environmental law for me. Very rarely am I expected to be available after hours/weekends/holidays. There have been a couple of days I stayed like half an hour later because something had a deadline and we were down to the wire but it doesn’t happen often.
In my first firm, the shareholder expected all billing staff to be available 24/7. We would come in at a normal time (I always came in an hour early to have quiet time to work). Shareholder was scheduled to come in at 10 but was always late. Billers would leave at 5, which put her nose out of joint, considering she would stay until 7 or 8 at the earliest. No OT, BTW - that was long before the DOL ruling that paralegals were nonexempt employees entitled to overtime pay.
Shareholder would ask us to come in on Saturdays. That woman would also call us at home on weekends.
I recall one time I asked for something like five days off. Shareholder wanted me to draft some kind of BS letter to a potential client. It was past 7 and I hadn't drafted the letter. She told me I could not leave until I drafted it - she said it was urgent that it go out.
When I returned to work, I observed the draft had been stuck in another paralegal's mailbox - the temp may have stuck it in there. It appeared to have been sitting there for all the time I was away. Evidently getting the letter out wasn't so urgent after all.
Only for emergencies, of which there are very few. (Plaintiff's med mal.) Except when we are in trial. Then it is 24/7, but even that has never been above what I would expect and be ok with.
Well truly that is up to you. My boss doesn’t push that on us. I like working and so I work as long as I am able beyond my regular hours. My boss allows me to do that and it makes but, I am one that was raised up to work hard, because I like what I do, highly appreciate my boss and co-worker I will work long hours. Now mind you that may not be for you. You have to be wired that way. Some paralegal do their 9-5 thing and leave and that’s okay. Everyone is different. Find out what works best for you, makes you happy. l
Senior Civil Litigation Paralegal - and no. I set firm boundaries with the attorneys I work for. On a rare occasion, I have been asked to stay late to help with something urgent, or to take a conference with a witness/expert after hours. But often I am given a freebie 'half day' in return. I take my vacation and no one contacts me.
You responded to me. This is unattainable. Stress is a killer, you ate not a doctor, they ate usually on call 24/7. You have to sleep, eat and yes, take a vacation. Are you paid a lot of money. This is insane to expect to be on call 24/7. I would look Gor another job, it seems you want o take a vacation without interruption but you can't. Are you the only paralegal in the office? If something unfortunately happened to you, they would replace you in a month, take care of yourself. Vacations are self care. Period
