I can share my experience. I was on the cusp of Associate Partner equivalent promotion at T2 strategy firm but decided to jump to BcG as PL. i lasted 1.5 year before i was counseled out. Many of my lateral peers got counseled out 7-9 months after joining, if their “pyramids” were not selling enough. Many of us are currently on PiP and very likely will be counseled out soon. Here are few thoughts:
- As EM1 say above, go in with the mindset that you will start as Consultant. You will be intentionally put in position to do Consultant work (ie excel model, slideworking, module ownership) before you are trusted with a team as PL
- Network wide and deep. Shamelessly ask for leaders who sell a lot of work, and do everything possible to look good. Pyramids with stable pipeline will already have a line of PLa before you
- Make yourself known not just to leaders you work with but with senior MDPs.
Hey thanks for this!
Can I DM you?
I’m going in with a 1 year timeline to make or break- already senior em in t2 with solid industry career so can exit to really good roles in industry across the world
I think it depends on your risk appetite. I’m going in with an expectation to start at C level to be tested, spat upon and then progress steadily and show my skills.
Okay this is EM1- I made Principal in a year after joining but would swear that this was due to a combination of luck, grit, sponsor generosity and client pull. My first project after making Principal is not as rosy but I think I will make it. In short, the odds are stacked up against you but you can do it
