Hot take: ADHD isn’t being overdiagnosed, it’s finally being recognized, especially in adults, women, and BIPOC folks who were overlooked for years. I wasn’t diagnosed until I was 31, after years of struggling with focus, memory, and emotional regulation. I thought I was just lazy or broken, because that’s what the world made me believe. Now people act like it’s some TikTok trend, and it honestly pisses me off. Why is it so hard for people to accept that diagnosis rates are rising because awareness is finally catching up to reality?

Because it’s thrown around so much. I’m not a doctor, but I firmly believe that some people are quick to say they’re adhd when it just isn’t medically so.

THIS! And honestly after I heard 1-2 people say that in meetings I reached out and was like it meant a lot to me to hear you share your ADHD yada yada. They all laugh like oh I’m not diagnosed, and just joking but I probably am who knows.

Infuriating.

While it is true that people that were neglected are now being diagnosed (F, diagnosed at 36 while my brother has had his diagnosis since his pre-teens), there is also a good group of influencers creating rage-y posts and making it easy for everyone to assimilate and then self-diagnose. Both things can be true - more people are being diagnosed and more people are throwing it around because they saw it on tiktok.

AuDHD here. I am genetically 75% my mom's family and it's so funny to see those threads now.

I suspect that ADHD (and autism, but the side formally known as Asperger's) is actually much more than studied. Considering how well connected we are now as people, and how hyper accurate the algorithms are, we're all just finding each other now.

I'm also thinking back to childhood for me and the world realized to accommodate us a lot better. We had more variety of jobs, places, and things to do as alternatives to things that didn't work. Everything is so homogenous now, it doesn't actually have much room to enjoy life anymore without being so aggressively singled out.

I doubt they'll accept the concept of "study more, find more" because education is increasingly being devalued now.

I’m in my late 30s. I was diagnosed in 95. It’s the same as 20 years ago that everyone was going on about over medicating and over diagnosing. I was being told by people ‘oh no you should try a better diet instead’ ‘ADD doesn’t really exist’ the same people now don’t mention it now.

Your right we are now catching up, but there will be people are go on about it. Give it few years and you’ll never hear from them again.

It’s looking like my job is gonna start asking us to return to the office. We have an open office plan and before we wfh FT I would save all my work for my telework days bc I can’t get shit done in the office. I’m having major anxiety about them making this decision. I know I’m not alone that people don’t want to return to the office. My ADHD and the open office just makes working from the office a nightmare and I’m feeling really nervous and kind of resentful.

Anyone a manager? I’m recently diagnosed (26F) and I can’t help but beat myself up everytime I fall short of my to do list. Makes me feel like a huge disservice to my team. I’ve been trying vitamin D and working out, but it makes my “highs” and “low” SO extreme. The simplest things are so complex in my mind.

If anyone feels similar, how do you manage these feelings? I’m personally considering switching to an individual contributor role, but can’t help but feel like a disappointment if I do.

What types of work accommodations can help people with ADHD? I am starting to believe 35+ of having not managed my ADHD has really negatively impacted me in career growth etc. I'm realizing a lot of things about myself are because of the ADHD. I want better for myself and family but 1. I don't enjoy the same things forever 2. Imposter syndrome and RSD make me believe it's acceptable to start over in new places at low salaries. 3. Typical college won't work for me. 4. I also can't relocate.

Just here to say I’m so thankful we have this safe space. I work in sales as a coordinator and do a bunch of paperwork with customers online. I LOVE PEOPLE but dread going to work everyday (wfh 3x a week) because the environment is toxic. I just found out that the only positive manager on my team is leaving. I am spiraling. I have a BS in Health Science (no chemistry classes taken and minimal biology education). Where are people happy in their careers? What careers are best for young women with ADHD? Who’s hiring?

I was diagnosed with ADHD at the age of 12. My family did not opt to put me on medication. I illegally discovered Adderall in college. Worked incredible. Got diagnosed after college & after having been fired from my first job. Passed the CPA exams on Adderall. Went off of it again. I do everything well at my job except for attention to detail within my excel files & emails. Will taking ADHD medication really fix this? Does anyone else have this issue and was it resolved by taking medication?

I have tried absolutely everything I can think of to limit distractions during the work day and none of it has worked. Working from home has only made it 100 times worse because now I know there are other more interesting things to be distracted by all around me. What do you do to hold focus during working hours? What will get me to be able to work for longer than 35 minutes without getting distracted?

Has anyone else tried Strattera, had success, and a few months later felt like work was a struggle again? Am I imagining it? There are reasons why I should not take stimulants, but I miss that feeling of being a “regular” person at work and so am curious if others have had a similar journey and where you all ended up
