How do I answer the salary question in a recruiter phone screen? What’s a reasonable mid-level salary (raise) to ask for? A slight bump? Highball? Should I mention (a higher # of) what I make now?

Don’t ever say a number first - ever. “I need more information about the role and comprehensive culture and benefits at [organization] before I’d be comfortable giving a number. Is there a range you have in mind for this role?” Throw the ball back in their court. If they won’t answer, you shouldn’t either. If they give a range that’s acceptable to you, let them know that’s within a range that warrants further discussion for the role.

I tell them that I don’t want to bid against myself, but I know what market rate for the position is and would assume that my salary is going to be commensurate with that

Tell them to get fucked. Never tell them the first number. Ever. Just as VP1 says above.

The last time I got this question, I pretended like they didn’t ask. Basically just said that I’m looking for a challenging role and want to work with good people. That was the answer to: what salary range are you expecting?

They didn’t say anything. Got the interview, then an offer. Then we discussed salary.

like

You tell them what you’re looking for. If they ask you what you’re making now, tell them, again, what you’re looking for. Don’t be bullied. They don’t work for you—they work for the agencies. And yes—give yourself a raise.

I always have this problem. Usually the call ends with them saying “sorry that’s outside the budget for this position"

like

I haven’t tried this yet, so I can’t really speak to it’s efficacy, but I remember reading that a good idea is to ask what the range is for the position before you give an answer. I think the idea I like best though is to not answer it and negotiate once you get the offer...

I think it’s a rule (in all of the US?) that potential employers can’t ask what you’re currently making. It’s none of their business.

As far as what’s reasonable, depends on your city.

In NYC it’s against the law for them to ask what you make

Hi Fishes,

I have an offer of around 39 LPA + bonus and my wife is holding an offer of 32 LPA in India. Now I have received another offer from a fintech organization in Berlin, Germany who are providing me 69k Euros as base salary + 5k Euros as RSU and also an on call support of 5k Euros annually + complete relocation assistance package. My wife currently doesn't have any offer for Germany and might need to search for a job after reaching there. Is it worth? Need your suggestions please.

Hey fishes. I have been offered Management Consultant role with CTC break up in terms of JB, RB, fixed and variable. So is the fixed amount my gross salary without any other deduction except TDS, or will the organisation contribution to PF be also deducted from the fixed component? Also, will claimable components like LTA, mobile bill reimbursement etc. be in addition to this fixed component or will they be included in it?

Is it common to negotiate software engineer salary at smaller companies? I know it’s common at FAANG, but what about for companies with around 200 engineers? I have a counter offer from my current company and on-site interviews scheduled for end of July with google and Amazon, but I’d prefer to go with the smaller local company if I can negotiate the salary (from offer letter) up another 5% or so.
