There aught to be a law against “freelance-sharking.” The percentage of commission should be capped. Especially now that nearly half the workforce is being involuntarily forced to freelance.
Yes this would be so helpful!!! Especially New York the market is SO saturated right now
They prey on ppl who don’t know any better. ——->🙋🏻♀️. I learned the hard way. Lost my ft job and worked a 9 month freelance contract making $65 an hour thinking I was king of the world. I still get really mad every time I think about it.
It seemed cool until I found out the going sr cw freelance rate is $125/hr. I tried negotiating for a higher rate and they told me this $ was above average and that I wouldn’t get higher anywhere else.
It sucks, but I was unemployed for 5 mos. and they got me a job.
I'm all for capping their take, but for those of us who are terrible at job-hunting, CC is a Godsend.
And you indirectly screwed yourself and all of us by accepting that lower pay. The job you have now is likely underpaid as well. They preyed on you, knowing you were desperate. Desperation isn’t something to be ashamed of, it is understandable when you are unemployed. But CC aren’t a godsend. They are leeches.
THAT explains why they balked at my day rate lmfao
When babysitters have a higher take-home than their freelancers, you know it’s bad
I suggest you all submit complaints and leave reviews on better business bureau:

Yeah, the BBB is as much a bureau as FedEx is federal.
NY has some pretty decent freelancer protection, so regulating these shitty employment agencies might actually be possible.
It’s not so easy to avoid them, because companies and recruiters are lazy and don’t make the effort to find talent on their own.
