I was interviewing somewhere that asked me to write a report tackling a current clients problem and was told I’d give a presentation to the VP when complete. I spent the whole weekend perfecting it, emailed it over requesting time to present it and.... nothing. I followed up every week for 5 weeks after emailing it. I never heard from the company again. Not even a “thanks we’ve received this” email. Since I’ve been burned, my advice is to setup a presentation meeting before you turn it in, or something like that to protect yourself from them taking your ideas and running.
@SAE1 - that’s ice cold but glad you were able tos share your story so the rest of us can be on the lookout
Free ideas for no money is what got the industry where it is in the 1st place. IMHO 🤷♂️
My book is my proof that I can make good work. If that’s not enough, they can hire someone else
I was once asked to help with a pitch...as a test. I declined.
Depends on the assignment, the agency, and what you’re comfortable with. If it’s an actual assignment for real work for a real client that is paying them then that’s a hard pass on any free work. If it’s a “We want to see how you think because for some reason the concept of a portfolio doesn’t do it for us” that’s more understandable but also asking you to do the work you do every day for money for free
Tell them soliciting unpaid work from a potential employee as a condition of employment violates federal OSHA guidelines.
Havas had me go through two phone interviews and flew me in to present a strategic approach for Coke. Then the recruiter ghosted with no response. I wish I hadn't shared that deck over email. Havas recruiters suck.
Not a chance. If you don’t trust my book, character after an interview, we’re not going to work
Garbage. No way
Don’t. Just don’t. This cannot be seen as common.
So basically they are having people do what agencies do for a pitch but just for a job. Sucks, but if the job is good and it will take less than half a day to do it might be worth it
I have done it but they never ever get the actual presentation. I show it off my laptop and even if they ask for it, the answer is no. In one case I had a full day of meetings which involved travel, did a killer presentation (where even my inside contacts told me the buzz was great on my presentation) and i still didn’t get it. I was super annoyed.
Refuse
If they want to see how you put your thoughts together, communicate in a group setting, and if you’re good in a room, valid. A good practice to look for is if they ask you to prepare and present a case study based on your previous work.
I’d tell them I’d be happy to and my day rate is $2000. :)
Seems a very strange request for an ACD-level position. (I did it once as a junior and got the job, so I have different opinion for that case.)
Nope unless it’s coding or something very technical.
Some companies do this to create an objective process that isn’t swayed by relationships and titles etc. They want to go for a level playing field that isn’t so subjective. But I think you should ask about they plan to follow up with you, and be transparent that you would like to be reassured you will get the courtesy of acknowledgement and feedback. I’ve actually used this to screen out people before I meet them. Even if they look good on paper. It’s like if they can’t do certain key tasks there’s no point in interviewing them. But agency recruiters and hiring managers are often just plain rude and act like they are doing people a favor. The reverse is true. Good luck!
If agencies acted with pitches the same way all the big shots on here do, none of us would have jobs
