How do you approach “culture fit” without unintentionally creating sameness? I prefer focusing on shared values instead of personality similarities.

The problem is it will create bias regardless because now your values aren’t diverse. If you don’t hire people who look like you, you’ll hire people who act or think like you - unless you bend over backwards to do the opposite. But now you can be bordering on reverse-bias.

Personally.. I always hired based on communication (ability to work collaboratively and speak to clients) but also using a meritocracy approach - who is the most capable and knowledgeable person, regardless of demographics.

We built an incredible culture at a start up by hiring talented people who were stretching a bit for the role, but they were passionate, personable, good communicators and contributors. Everyone was always willing to help out, solve problems and our founders were mentors - so culture and hiring were a big way we built culture fit.

Serious billing question - if during the course of the day, you first receive an email from Client A at say 11:10am and you read it, you then respond to it at 12:20pm. You get another email at 2pm from Client A and respond immediately. The next email comes in at 4pm, you read it and respond only at 4:30pm. None of the email responses take more than 3-5mins. You are working on matters for other clients at all other times during the day. How much are you billing for Client A?

How many billable hours per week is considered at capacity? I’m getting pushback on boundaries I’m setting about additional matters and marketing work from my firm when I’ve been billing 60-75 hours per week for the last 6 weeks, and I’m still behind on my work. I feel like it’s reasonable to not kill myself further to fit in more/turn things around faster at this point, but am I being unreasonable? I expect my workload to remain at this level through the end of the year at least.

How do you usually ask for PTO? I have the days accrued but I have PTSD from a past job about asking for time off. I’m wanting to take 5 days in June for a family trip and know I need to put in the request to the partners I work for sooner rather than later. I had to take a day this last week and they were great about it (immediate “Yeses”) but somehow, asking for a week feels like a hurdle. (Also, I’m only 7 months in, haven’t met the partners IRL, and we only really communicate via email)

So i work at this company in coimbatore (india) and we have a very poor work life balance. We have a 6 day working policy and no vacation or sick leaves just 1 day casual leave a month. We usualy had to work around 10 to 12 hrs and no leaves even during govt holidays. How can i make them understand this is killing our personal life. I have already shared a couple of emails to hr and CFO of our company to no avail. Please advice on what should I do next

Any thoughts on the best certifications to get in order to help move forward? I have considered the CCP from World at Work, but it’s fairly pricey to get by the time you wrap up everything. I was looking at both SHRM-CP and SPHR. Everyone that I have spoken to has the SHRM, but that’s also only looking at individuals in a small geographic footprint and within 3-4 different companies. Hi community, humbly seeking professional HR advice. I recently joined my company’s HR team. In an informal conversation, a senior HRBP, considered a peer, called 2 of our fellow HR colleagues “worthless.” I should have rebuked her then & there but was so caught off guard. This person is 20 years my senior. In the same conversation this person advocated for me on a separate matter & complimented my performance. I am not sure what course of action to take at this time. So, a recruiter gave me feedback that my lack SPHR or SHRM-SCP is causing my resume to be knock out by AI and human recruiters despite my position and work history in Multinationals and being in Technology. Am I being paid competitively? I have been the Onboarding Sup for my HR dept for over a year now and I’m being paid the state min for salary, which for CA is 62,400. I have not gotten a merit raise since the last 2 January’s, the state raises the threshold for salary folks. My company says that was my raise. Is this right? I bring a background from the clinical operations of my company, scheduling, field work, and what the average employee faces. I want to look else where but I’m not sure.

General Question I started tuition reimbursement last year in August. I since have an interview with another job that is paying a lot more. You know how you apply to something not really thinking that job would call back? Should I get an offer, what do I do about tuition Reimbursement? Do they send a check and tell me to pay it?
