Bain & Company I have a second round with Bain & Company coming up at the DC office for Experienced Consultant role. Excited, but hella nervous. Recruiter said it’d be 3 separate interviews, all with Partners; 2 case, 1 fit. About 40 mins each. First round was 2 case interviews with Sr. manager & Associate Partner. Been a rough year, so definitely looking forward to this opportunity. I’ve been on the site and going through preparation and materials. Any advice or suggestions welcomed!

Once I asked for a personal day because I really needed a personal day. My boss became so nice after that. He thought I was interviewing
If you own a home, “home repairs” are a good excuse. Also, if you went on a trip recently, “lost luggage being delivered” is a good one too. Or “Comcast needs to come out”
“I’ll be in a bit late on Thursday.”
Your boss isn’t your parent, they don’t need a reason for reasonable things. I’m assuming you’re a good employee who gets his/her work done, so saying you’ll be in a bit late or are taking a lunch is perfectly fine
“My grandma died... again.”
Don’t supply details when they aren’t needed. Just say “I’m out of the office.” Liars give unnecessary details and talk about how their car broke down because they were speeding to get their cat to the vet because she ate a ball of string that was originally intended to be used to knit a hat for your new niece.
No one cares, and unless you’re out every day, odds are no one will follow up asking for details if you don’t provide them.
Occam’s Razor: just take time off.
Rehab
If you have a pet, “need to take the pet to the vet” also works. If you have a trip coming up “I need to renew my passport”
Schedule early in the am. Give the heads-up. Show up not too late. Bring a change of clothes so it's not obvious.
Mental health day or theres a leak in your apartment
Your manager knows what’s up no matter what you say - my team is famous for “working from home in the morning.” Good managers want to know you’re looking anyway - either they will help try to improve your situation or they will encourage you efforts to look outside (either because they want you to be happy and can’t help at current place of employment or because they are okay to lose you).
I just tell people I have a job interview. They always laugh b/c they think I’m kidding.
@SD1 ah c’mon, play along 🙃 That’s far too rational and mature
I have an interview. Maybe that will change your current situation without having to go through the drama. If you are valuable you will get an immediate counter, if not, you know where you stand
What CD1 said, you’re not a child. I’m WFH today or I’ll be in a little late or leaving a little early.
Dermatologist appointment is my favorite.
It won’t elicit too many questions.
You’re also not contagious or gravely ill.
The dressy clothes can give it away, so throw them off by dressing up three times that week, even without a dentist appt in the middle of the day
Non account people still dress up for interviews?
Dental work can often take a few visits
Have to let the super in. Gas company checking stove. Cable company. Doctors appointment. Electrician coming to install new outlet in the bathroom
