Hark, fair recruiter,
Thy missive, like a summons, hath reached mine ears, and though I doth feel gratitude for thy interest, I must with all due respect, declare my decision thus: the position thou hast proffered lies beneath the station of mine experience and seniority.
In truth, 'tis with a heavy heart that I, in the manner of Hamlet's soliloquy, do ponder upon this offer, and find it to be a poor fit for one of my stature. Verily, I seek a role more commensurate with mine skills and years of toil.
Pray, let not this refusal be construed as a slight or disrespect, for thy courtesy in extending the opportunity is duly acknowledged. I am ever in search of a challenge befitting my qualifications, and I beseech thee to keep me in thy thoughts for future openings of greater accord.
With kindest regards and hopes for fruitful endeavors,
Capital One

Well, are you interested?
Am I interested in cutting my salary in half or more? No
Am I interested in keeping the relationship for other relevant opportunities? Yes

“Thank you for your interest, what about my experience caught your eye?”
Wait for them to realize how stupid they look.
I just don’t respond to be honest. If they didn’t take the time to review my profile and to send an appropriate lead, I am not going to waste my time responding to them.
Just tell them…and don’t feel insulted. Half of the recruiters out there don’t understand the work they are trying to fill so they guess based on what the JD shows and your resume/profile.
I work independently and recently have had a challenging time find roles at my level so I’ve applied to more junior roles. The time I had to spend explaining to them why I would be able to do the job was beyond ridiculous. In one instance I was transferred and re screened by their supervisors then their vp of recruitment
Learn to ignore.
Titles could be misleading. Either ignore or say that there might be some misalignment as the role sounds too junior and you’d be looking only at roles with comp xyz level
Then you know all that you need to know (and maybe the recruiter felt like an idiot afterwards for bonus points 😂)
This happens a lot with offshore recruiters in my experience. I tell them that the role has the responsibility and pay more aligned with what I was doing 10+ years ago, but am looking for X roles at x+ salary. If they ghost, it means they don't have anything that's a fit.
I get so many IT PM roles for like $50k. I was making more then that 17yrs ago. Lol
The recruiter has sent a bulk mailer and hasn't researched your credentials or experience.
1. You can ignore
2. You can have some fun.....
This is a specialty of lazy recruiters. I rarely reply. Just once I was so flabbergasted that someone reached out to recruit for a job in a random call center, I replied asking if they say I saw I had an Ivy League MBA. They replied they had a lot of Ivy League MBAs working in their call center. 😂
Still wouldn’t have made sense to reach out to someone with my profile.

Just say thank you for reaching but since this new role will imply demotion, I will have to respectfully decline. If there are opportunities for director or above, please let me know.
You don’t.
Tell them you’re interested and what your range is…see what they say 👀
At this point they’re trolling😂

If it’s a company I’m interested in, I’ll say something to the effect of “thanks so much for reaching out. I’m familiar with x company and it’s one of the places I would like to work if the right opportunity came about. It sounds like the role you’re describing is similar to work I have performed in the past. I’d be well suited to do that work, but I’m currently seeking greater leadership opportunities, particularly pertaining to people engagement and team performance. If you have any roles that would allow me to contribute in those areas I’d be happy to connect, but for now it seems this one isn’t a great fit.
