Why don’t you carefully explain your thinking to him and let him see if he can expand the role for you? You know the guy liked your work, why would you just throw that away? Grass is rarely greener my friend
I like this approach EY1, thanks a lot!
It depends. Do you want to be treated as a unit of capacity with some specific capabilities, or do you want to partner with a leader and develop skills & responsibilities more organically.
The “don’t owe anybody anything” is one way; it is also more likely that you won’t have anyone in your corner when things get tough.
Maybe this is a big 4 vs other firms - but I wouldn’t want to be seen as a fungible unit of capacity / what have you done for me lately mercenary.
You are in consulting, who you know is more important in the long run. Even if it means sucking up and doing a short term gig. As E1 said, express what you feel, and say it like “I feel this role will <fill in your reason>”. And have an honest conversation with your partner. You’ll be surprised.
If you plan to be at the firm long term, aligning to partners and accounts is the best option.
Appreciate the perspective. I definitely don’t intend to stay long term... my main goal is to get the most skills in shortest time possible and then move out of consulting.
... the project doesn’t give me new useful skills I want, and frankly not my cup of tea to put it mildly.
I’m faced with this too- in terms of a SM pressuring me to stay if he gives me a raise. I don’t think you should owe anyone anything. Your bonus/raise is based on past performance and the year(s) you’ve already given to your project/firm. I would cite your performance if he tries to hold it over you.
Totally agreed with many sentiments here, but more context: I’ve sucked it up and put in 9 months for this project, but I firmly believe it is in the interest of my long term growth if I take other roles, instead of being boxed in here longer. There is no way to be sure when I can roll off this one, once I onboard again (happened before when I kept on being extended).
I do like EY1’s suggestion and others who echo him/her so I’ll try that. 🙏🏼
Get your counselor involved also. If yours doesn’t suck, then long term career development is his/her responsibility as well. Personally, shielding my counselors from that sort of awkward conversation makes my life easier in the long run anyway. (FAR easier than damage control)
(Keep in mind your rating and reviews were agreed by a panel and not just that one partner. )
However from a relationship perspective, it would be beneficial if you stayed on the partners good side. If you can't find another role quickly, work with the partner to find a compromise on the role to make it more to your liking.
