I don’t think it’s about caring less. It’s more about staying relaxed, not stressing, and know that things will work out/get done
. It is about learning not to sweat the small things; but first understanding what the small things are. We want people who care. Those are the people who do succeed. I know it seems like everyone succeeds, but they don’t. I have been doing this a long time - multiple decades (seriously) and I can assure you if you care, but learn not to be so stressed (and I know first hand that is easier typed than done and takes time and experience) that you will be successfully and happy. The sooner you find that balance in your career the happier you’ll be. For me it didn’t come until I was a partner for a couple of years. I wish I found it sooner. I hope you do.
Early in my career I found it hard to gain perspective on my work when I was always surrounded by other professionals in my same line of work. When I met my wife she was working as a nurse in an oncology unit. When I was stressed it was usually about a tough deadline or meeting that didnt go well but when she was stressed it was about someone being terminally ill, dying, or having a cancer recur.. it is cliche but the saying “we aren’t saving lives here” does actually apply. That helped me to put my stress in perspective and it allowed me to let go of some of the small issues and focus on creating value in my role v stressing about a deadline. I still care about my work but in a practical and flexible way.
Please keep in mind utilization isn’t everything. If someone is very smart and efficient and can do in 1 hour what it takes others to do in 2 that person’s utilization will be lower. So they are penalized because they are efficient? Similarly, I know people who are working on large and important PD projects who have low utilization but are very involved in adding value. There is more to utilization than meets the eye. Not for everyone, but more than you may know. Never judge yourself by some number on a page
I keep a pic of Tupac in my cubicle when he had both middle fingers in the sky screaming "F$&k em!”
Were all dealt different hands. Also people tend to rely on those who they can. Hard work is rewarded with more hard work.
Thanks for the advice EY 1&2. And yes utilization is posted on a SharePoint site for everyone to see.

Just care less...you're an accountant. Nothing we do is that important at the end of the day. Do enough to perform in the middle of the pack and go home and enjoy the parts of your life that actually matter
Sidebar, how do you know they are 50% utilized? Are utilization numbers posted for all to see? If not, I wouldn’t judge and consider you may not have the full picture. If they are seriously behind you in performance, you’ll see that distinction come through in higher pay and quicker promotion to manager.
FYI utilization isn’t the sole purpose for promotions. When I worked at EY, that tool was all hype. they don’t even factor that in promotion cases. it’s all about about the relationships you have with the people above you. Just control things you have the power to control. You can’t control everything so just be content with doing your best. Cheers📍
I recommend a magic mushroom trip some weekend, can really change your perspective on life and your place in it. They're not addictive and even one time can drastically change your outlook.
If you're leery about expanding your consciousness, at least ingest some THC now and then to expand your mind and relax a bit.
This post may sound like a joke but I can assure you it's not.
Just simply care less
Which office are you in that has seniors utilized only 50%?
It’s hard but you need time to sleep. If you’re not sleeping enough it factors into and plays a heavy part into your stress. It’s not easy because there’s always more and more work.
Try breathing exercises, meditation, exercise, or find a hobby you enjoy or find fun and stick with it. You need to learn to do your best and forgive yourself for the rest. Learn to let go and move on. Also setting up some kind of routine does help alleviate some of the stress. focus on the positive and laughter helps. 🤡
Yeah, my local business unit sends out an hours report every period with performance YTD
One thing to remember is, we are in consulting world. So, our network/relationships and how we manage work and people(could be subordinates or boss) matters more than no. of hours.
@EY6 i read it but not sure if it totally helped... i still feel like i care TOO much similar to OP
