Skiing is easier to pick up but harder to master. Snowboarding feels more of a headache for first timers, but you quickly pickup after a couple of trips. So if you see this is as a once off experience just do morning group lessons and by the end of the trip you’ll be able to do some runs with your mates.
If you just want to explore the mountain and enjoy the trip I think skiing is the way to go.
I have only ever snowboarded but was fortunate to learn when young so no hassle when I go now. Whereas some of my friends (first timers) have tried to snowboard and struggled.
You can have lessons before but the size of indoor slopes in UK makes it fairly meaningless compared to whats out there. I would recommend maybe a couple here if you want to familiarise with the basics, then have some morning lessons out there and after a couple of days you will be in the swing of things and able to explore more in the afternoons with the rest of your group
If you choose snowboarding, be prepared to fall over a lot - nothing hurts worse than the second day of snowboard
It is way more steezy than skiing though
