Case by case dependent. In PEG, yeah it’s prob 9-11 with a break for gym and dinner mon tue wed, early night thu (done by 6), and then done by 4 on Fridays.
My last 2 GP cases have been more like 45-55 hours depending on the week (more on steerco prep weeks, less on others).
SMs, especially newer ones, do tend to work more than that to try and drive answer + create and maintain sustainability for their teams.
Start in peg, rip that bandaid off early. You’re gonna master Bain toolkit way faster than those of us who started in GP
to your initial question OP, the work is mostly on a completely different scale due to the business model and structure of engagements. there are definitely instances where they might be similar, but on avg it's very different especially if you look at generalist mbb teams.
in big 4/ACN teams a manager may simply be a cog alongside other span breakers and other managers. whereas in mbb an engagement mgr is mostly standalone and the pivotal role between partners and the entire engagement team. for example rarely would you see mbb engagements with multiple EM/PL/SMs all together.
therefore the lift, accountability and structural load on that individual is typically heavier. there's a strong reason why many say joining laterally into EM/PL/SM roles in mbb are one of the most challenging.
According to Management Consulted, a career-development site, folks at MBB actually work less hours than folks at B4/ACN. Why? Per the site, cases are narrowly define and they don’t use a T&M model, thus there is no incentive to charge extra hours.
Of course, define less hours. I doubt anyone at MBB is working less than 45-50 Hrs per week.
Take all the above with a huge grain of salt.
Would you say MBB averages 70 or closer to it? MCK1 what are your average hours?
Accenture is probably more like 50-60, but if you’re on the 60 end it’s because of +1 or side of desk support. It’s a bigger deal at Accenture because our client work isn’t typically taking up all evening for us.
