Get the Rita Mulcahy PMP book. Much better to study with than the PMBOK. Do lots of practice exam questions.
I took an in person class (about 10 hours) and the self studied evenings and weekends for 3-4 weeks. Rita book is gold standard and has practice tests. It's not hard to grasp but they force you to learn their (PMIs) methodology. Def do lots of practice tests BC you don't want to sit for a second test. Since getting my PMP I get about monthly LinkedIn hits from recruiters specifically looking for that.
Did a 3 day bootcamp, couple of practice exams, and took the test the next week. The biggest challenge is thinking "their" way.
No. Most PMP are too strict to be good PMs...
Wouldn't agree with BCG. Study, take the exam, get it in your resume for opportunities. Don't be a d*ck about it ; don't be rigid and mention the PMBOK to prove a point.
I've had my PMP for nearly 15 years. Figure around 6 months of solid studying. Go to a PMI bootcamp. Like any other framework, the PMBOK will give you tools. Use the tools and techniques you need or feel are appropriate for the project and culture you are working in. Not every project needs every tool.
Maybe a few hours to study
What pwc2 said. I did the firm 3 week boot camp and studied the Rita Mulcahy book for about 4 weeks (took the practice tests). Never looked at my pmbok and passed.
For me it's been helpful and I've used it on my current engagement but it wasn't needed/useful for the engagement I had prior to this one.
Let me clarify in a consulting practice not some bs quasi assurance group like itra
