You should expect and plan to be laid off. At some point. And if you don’t get laid off for a long time, like 26 years, you’re probably underpaid, or work on something so stable that anyone could do it
The good news is that the layoff is usually for the best. Most people I know who have been laid off landed somewhere much much better.
Just dealing with my first and only layoff now, 10 years into my career
Edit- didn’t mean for this to be a reply to ACD1 but agree with everything they said
Fired twice. It's cool. If you're doing anything worth doing some people will disagree. Some of those people can fire you. If you stick to your guns sometimes they will. And you'll just move on to somewhere that appreciates you.
Never in my 26 years. If you work hard companies don’t let you go
I'd assume H1 is using 'hatd work' as shorthand for being valuable. I think many of us use it that way. Obviously we all know working hard is only a small piece of it, but saying 'work hard, make your bosses happy, attach revenue to yourself, play politics, and cover your ass' doesn't quite roll off the tongue in the same way :)
Laid off twice. Each resulted in a job title promotion, more recognition, better work, and better pay. Understand that layoffs are not always positive but also it’s not always negative either.
Expect it. Just a fact of the job.
Never in advertising.
Twice in 23 years. I wasn’t unemployed for more than a couple months, and came out much better both times.
Twice in 23 years.
One time the agency let go of 40 people in a single day due to client cuts.
Another time I was working at a toxic place and the only thing keeping me there was $. I started freelancing a few weeks later so that turned out to be good for my bank account.
Laid off twice in 10 years due to client changes. Found new work very quickly both times.
Twice from two different agencies, and I'm doing just fine
I’ve been laid 16, maybe 17 times. I’m 52.
None yet, but I’m saving up just in case it happens.
Never been laid off in 20 years. But left a couple jobs when the agency I was working at at the time took downturns and the writing was on the wall.
Pro
Never
Never in ten years but did leave right before layoffs once
2x laid off in my career of 12 years. Quit willingly 3x.
Twice. It's part of the territory with agency life. You're not only dealing with the client roster fluctuating but you're also contending with agency acquisitions and mergers all the time.

18 years and not once. But the older and more expensive I get, the bigger the target grows
in 25 years, I've only been laid off once. I was a jr. and had a pretty big ego after getting a few TV spots produced. When we lost a client, they let me go. I learned a lot and have worked hard to keep my attitude positive and to be a team player (account service/strategy are your partners, not your adversaries). I think that has helped me over the years. However, sometimes financial things happen and an agency has to let go of great people. Losing clients is just part of the business.
Twice in 20 years. Once after 911 (like many others) and once after the economic downturn of 2008 (like many others).
