I think having a negative view on self diagnosis might be a little bit more valid if it wasn't so impossibly difficult in many places to get an assessment. But you can't really be mad at someone for trying to find ways to help themselves when the medical system is not supporting them.
It does feel like everyone has ADHD these days. I think some of it is the algorithms that show those of us who consume ADHD content a lot more of it. I know there are some who self-diagnose who definitely don't have it. My best friend was convinced he had it - went through the testing and he doesn't. (He's got significant anxiety) On the other hand, the only reason I got my testing and diagnosis is because I identified the signs in myself and sought help. So, I think self-diagnosis can be accurate and beneficial as long as it's followed up with medical evaluation.
Tbh, I don’t really care. I see a lot of people that seem to get mad about it. Frankly, even if someone self-diagnoses, they can’t really do much with that information unless they see a professional. If they’re wrong, then they’re wrong. I do think the increase in information and awareness of the disorder is extremely important. I for one would’ve never gotten the help that I did if the information wasn’t available to me and shared around the internet. It made it possible for me to realize, “hey, I could actually have this, because it’s not just that stereotypical five year old boy bouncing off the walls kind of thing.” Are there a ton of inaccurate information and misrepresentations out there? Sure. But for the people who truly have the disorder and follow up with medical professionals it can be literally lifesaving. Susie down the street may claim she has ADHD because she saw a Tik Tok and thinks it’ll get her brownie points, but that’s Susie’s problem. People who have never been able to figure out “what was wrong with them” now have more tools to do so. And that’s really all that matters to me.
I trust it as much as people know themselves. They are looking for symptom management and community.
Navigating healthcare in America means advocating for yourself on a consistent basis. Accessibility for testing is a huge issue. It's expensive, not every insurance company pays for it, everyone doesn't have access to specialized professionals, etc.
Instead of viewing the people negatively who lack resources and power, put that energy towards the horrible system.
I mean people could offer to help with access for those who self-diagnosis. Offer to pay for testing or provide transportation. What other ways can we help those get a clinical diagnosis?
I think there are a lot of people who like to say they have ADHD or use it as an exucse for things like poor time management when they don't have ADHD. That being said I do think some peole who think they have ADHD probably do but not all of them.
