I bet you would change your mind if I told you that I get ~450k at a FAANG to do just that. PMO gives you a seat on the table in most discussions. It’s upto you what you decide to do with that. You could be moderately successful by creating and managing status and project plans OR you could be transformational by bringing teams together and driving/owning initiatives.
Most exes are unironically pmo. It’s that the P is worth billions.
You get to choose?

Not a bad gig to get mid 6 figures and work 45-50 hours a week 🙌 chasing prestige is a fools game. I’m trying to settle down and have kids yo

Someone has to do it. Ever seen a complex program managed by a group of developers? Spoiler alert, it will be a train wreck 🚂 ☠️
People gotta eat, man.
Used to think that, but changing my mind slowly. I’ve done some PMing recently, focusing on value delivered, delivering the project as per clients expectations, and making sure the team isn’t burning out (as opposed to only metrics, KPIs, etc). Doing it as I’m getting staffed on some projects where I’m not the SME, so it doesn’t make sense for me to drive content. Have kinda enjoyed it.
Nah dawg l, everyone clicks to agree to the T&C. I did the same type of work and hated it, and took a paucity to leave. I meant it in jest — didn’t mean to offend anyone.
I was on a PM internal project on a mega client where my job was onboarding new consultants, getting them WiFi credentials, training them on all the internal tools/compliance.
Terrible project career wise, but had a tough time rolling off because I legit worked 1-2 hours a day and got the same pay for roles where I worked 15 hour days and traveled. This role grew my network so much that I eventually got onto a much better real project within that client.
But tbh, if I got paid 250-300k as an MD, I would never leave that project. The wlb was unreal

I hear you. I became one because of the money and the option to work from wherever I wanted. But I dread the work itself.
I wonder if you see the full perspective of what PMO is or only had a glimpse of it.
Project management and portfolio management are frameworks that drive decision making and execution.
I think most people think it is taking meeting minutes and following up on action items. And miss out on the aspects where the true value is.
I don't know why, but the the memory of TMNT3 when the guys transported from. Ancient Japan were told to do "hockey" and they remembered watching the hockey fights with Kasey Jones on TV. And they said hockey? Hockey? Hockey!!! And they went on the rumble.
Kinda like that. But maybe if it was like. Why would anyone choose to do hockey as a career. All they do is tie up ice skates and take them off.
But then again PMO is nothing like hockey...
