How to approach this situation: I am helping my direct manager with finalizing DPA template my manager drafted. Manager’s initial draft is too wordy, long, inconsistent, etc. But when I make revision suggestions, manager gets defensive 😅 Should I still keep my suggestions so that the template is reasonable, concise, and industry standard? Or keep my redlines minimum so that I don’t offend my manager?

🥲 you are right lol

Don’t fight them on wordy/long, push back on inconsistency or where it’s not industry-standard.

Make your life easier and also discuss backup provisions for inevitable negotiations…

like

Also remember this draft is just V1. It’s not getting carved into Mount Rushmore. There will be periodic updates. Feel free to get a head start by making an annotated draft with your proposed changes.

Why are they creating a new one from scratch? Just crib from one of your vendors who has a good one.

like

I totally agree with you. I don’t understand why my manager is drafting from scratch.

Dont try and wordsmith.

I want to switch roles from a creative director who oversees all aspects of the company’s creative (marketing campaigns and brand building mostly; also production, performance marketing ads, product design, managing design team) to focusing 100% on building our brand, educating both customers and employees about our value prop. I hate managing people or logistics and scheduling. What would this role be called? Do you see it as demotion from CD?

Additional Posts in In-House Counsel

How did current in-house attorneys find their positions? I am currently in big law with 3 years of experience. Seems that most recruiters can only help me lateral to other big law firms.

NFW- I just had a good laugh. Earlier today I was on a video conference call reviewing a Private Label Agreement template with a larger company who wishes to brand label products we develop and manufacture. We came to a very one-sided provision and my sales VP stated “for this one, how can we just say ‘hell no’ ...nicely?” The other person on the call said we can replace the wording with just NFW (no f@$* way) and I said “I will have to add that to the defined terms section so it’s clear”

Very specific to retail and/or hospitality in-house roles: has anyone found a good solution for predictive scheduling? Our retail division has one set of software for scheduling and one for payroll, and neither of them can handle predictive scheduling compliance issues unless they’re used for both the scheduling and payroll functions. I’m coming up empty on ideas for them to bridge the gap, but I’m also new to my compliance counsel role, so I would be overjoyed if anyone has suggestions.

Any tips for moving up in a medium/large-sized legal department, aside from switching companies? Got another perm offer in a different industry for similar salary, but I might have to relocate and I'm concerned the work may involve translation instead of pure legal work.
