Audiobooks.
i actually love kindle app + audible audio book combo. it narrates it for you, and highlights the words as it’s being read.
it’s called immersive reading, made to improve accessibility
Audio books, free through the library with the libby app. All you need is a library card and it works the same as a physical check out of books. Except it's digital, and it will keep track of your progress, titles read, and remind of due dates. It works on any digital device.
Happy reading 📚
Hoopla is another service. Some libraries have one or the other. Fortunately mine has both.
I had never read a full book until I was about 31. I've probably read 150 books in the past 8ish years but i can only read non-fiction as my brain enjoys learning new facts. I find things that intrigue me and I read. Some authors are easier than others, but this has worked for me. Good luck!
Start with books you’ll like.
Open chat gpt, tell it about yourself and what you like, then ask for book recommendations
Ideally, books that are hard to put down
Also - audiobooks
There's a font for ADHD readers online which helps me zoom through text, but I wish it were more widely available and an option for in print books
I think topic and author are both important, in terms of finding books (and other materials) you'll be able to get through reasonably.
Maybe starting off with short form works may also help?
Join a book club! That’s the only thing that motivates me to actually read anything outside of work.
Try reading what you like. I listen to nonfiction audiobooks and read fiction on books/kindle. Do you have any topics that interest you? Maybe can recommend something
I started reading books aloud at one point like I was giving a speech to a crowd of people and somehow that worked. Now I just sorta mumble or mouth the words as I read them so I look less insane. Idk if it’s a proven method but, hey, always worth a try right?
I find it easier to read books from a tv series or movie that I liked. I have a mental image for the characters, voices for the dialogue, and have a general idea of the story so if I zone out for a paragraph here and there and doesn’t ruin anything. It also gives it a detective element because I like the find places where the book and show are different.
Some times this will lead to an author or story type I really like and I will get a few more books out of it as well.
Same. I have never been able to read books without losing focus. I would read a chapter and literally forget everything I read. Book reports were a nightmare for me when I was in school. Magazines were it for me because reading I thought was important for your brain health. It’s too bad most of them are just garbage these days.
Audible is how I do mine! I'm currently in another re-read of one of my favorite authors and series, while waiting for the new book in the series to be released! I'm currently hooked on Jim Butcher's Dresden Files Series.
This has been a HUGE issue for me...I was an avid reader growing up, but I started having trouble retaining what I've read around the time I started high school. Like, I have legitimately cried over the fact that I'm no longer able to read like I used to.
Honestly I can only ever focus on a book when I am really really into it. Otherwise my attention drifts off and thas when I know the book isn't that interesting. When I am interested in a book I will hyperfixate on it and not be able to put it down.
