P.S. I know titles at AWS sound more junior, but pay / responsibility and typical transfer seem to match my hypothetical scale mapping.
Friend of mine who was an SM and had good tech startup experience went into AWS at l5
Pro
SM is somewhere in between 6-7. Junior SM (years 1-2) is probably a 6 while a senior SM (years 3+) is a 7.
I went from C at Deloitte (3 yrs) to L5 at Amazon. 92k to 140k. I would most equate SM to L6/7.
I would map 5 to Manager, but again it depends because the roles at AWS and Amazon can vary wildly within the same Level
For clarity,a former coworker was an L5 at AWS and is now M at Deloitte
Here is the correlation that I have seen-
M = L5
SM/ Junior (recently promoted) MD= L6
Junior Partner (equity)/ Senior MD (non-equity Partner equivalent) = Junior L7
Mid-level Partner (equity) = Senior L7
Managing Partner (equity) = L8
I am using the word Partner and Principal interchangeably.
Many external hire senior L7s have been EVP, SVP, or VP at other large companies. Some of them were able to get into L8 role but quickly realized the steep expectations and struggled at the level. External hire L8s (called Director at AWS) have had roles with significant impact and visibility (think global CIO).
I think there's a wide range within L6 and L7. Most MBA grads start at L6 and stay there for a few years. I think L7 in most cases is equivalent to a Senior Manager
Typically you will get down levelled as you go into FAANG
L5 is 0-5 YOE typically
I would politely disagree and rather categorise as 3-5
