Noting the difference between men and women, pichai says, “ Women typically look for jobs with a purpose. Studies show that. I think it’s important for them to see the why of why you need to need technology,"
When asked about the gender parity in tech, Wojickicki says, “I think the problem is, is that computer science as a whole and tech as a whole has a reputation of being a very geeky male industry. And so if you look, not within the industry, but just as an educational pipeline, you see that we only have 20 percent of women graduating with computer science degrees, and that’s a problem in and of itself, because that means we don’t have enough people graduating who have those degrees. And you say, well, why is that? I think it has to do with these perceptions that the computer industry is, a geeky, not very interesting, not social industries, and it just couldn’t be further from the truth."
Isn’t that basically what Damore was basically getting at in his memo? He never claims that men are superior to women in any way. He just says that women are wired differently than men and so they have different interests. They prefer working with people and majoring in the humanities or liberal arts whereas men prefer to major in stem fields that regularly pay higher than the humanities. Additionally, it’s not that Silicon Valley isn’t trying to hire less women but it’s a supply issue where the majority of women (80% ) simply don’t have the qualifications to break into tech, whereas a disproportionate number of men are qualified with their stem degrees. Iceland is a perfect example of how in the most egalitarian of societies, women will disproportionally gravitate towards less stem fields which is why nursing is dominated by females even more so than in the US. An interesting find is that in less gender equal countries (Muslim) such as Albania and Saudi Arabia, there were way more women in Stem fields than in western countries because women strives to be independent so they could be treated as equals and didn’t have to be reliant and submissive to males but not because they genuinely interested in STEM.

I swear radical feminism has so many double standards that encourages mob mentality that demonizes men and think all men are out to get females and keep them oppressed. Maybe in countries that practice Islam but western countries are very egalitarian and if anything, these days, men seem to have more to worry about with all the false metoo accusations and how society tends to believe women but not men.
Why is it so hard to accept that women and women are just different? Nobody is saying that men are better than women. If anything, women probably make better leaders since they seem to have more compassion and they tend to be more fair whereas men strive to be leaders for the prestige, respect, and power.
Ummm, no. I think the article does a good job of pointing out why these execs' responses are disappointing, but Damore was making a point that men and women are actually unequally suited for roles in tech. That’s not at all the same.
So there are multiple components to this. I agree that the pipeline can be part of the problem but in no way do I agree that, the pipeline issue is biological. As a society we push women to want things that are different than we push men to want. That starts from a young age and is part of the reason the discrepancy in the pipeline exists.
People who have been through more are more likely to want to have a career that means something. Women are more likely to have been persecuted in some way than men so they are more likely to want meaning in their work. Also if we say women will always go into careers that mean something and men do not care, there would be more women as surgeons (approx 20%).
Women also get pushed out of studying STEM subjects because they feel pushed out of the field because it is such a boys club. It’s hard to feel like you cannot relate to your classmates and continue down that path. It is much easier at that point to go where most women are pushed (liberal arts, nursing, etc.)
He’s not *not* a right-winger. https://www.theguardian.com/science/2018/feb/07/how-dangerous-is-jordan-b-peterson-the-rightwing-professor-who-hit-a-hornets-nest

People sure are going out of their way to be offended...
D1 We need to be very clear on the language. So when you say unequally suited, what do you mean by that? If youre claiming that he is saying that women are simply inferior and unable to take on these roles because they simply don’t have what it takes, then you’re not correct and it’s obvious that you haven’t read his memo. I have read his memo numerous times and nowhere does he mention this. Most of the memo is spent explaining the biological differences between men and women as well as the primary motivations and interests of men and women being different. He explains that most women choose not to go into stem fields which responsible for the gender disparity in tech, not that women aren’t capable. He also explains how men have a higher drive for status and leadership positions which require longer hours and more stress. He then goes on to provide suggestions on how we can improve the gender landscape by implementing things like pair programming since women enjoy working with people more, women are also more cooperative so allow those who are exhibiting cooperative behavior to thrive, also provide more work-life balance since women are less tolerant of a lack of work life balance than men are. Please point me to the exact verbiage where he claims women are incapable of performing tech jobs.
D2 - society is partly the issue in certain countries like the US where gender norms do pressure men and women to go into certain fields for various reason such as prestige, respect, power all of which usually equates to longer hours.
Interesting that you bring up being a surgeon to prove a point because being a surgeon fits exactly into the matrix of variables that James Damore brought up. Being a surgeon is one of the more respected, prestigious, more competitive branches of medicine which includes longer hours, all of which are things that Damore mentions motivates men, whereas with most women, they don’t value those variables as much except for the variable of getting to help people. Now, if we were to take those variables of long hours, respect, competitiveness, and prestige out of the equation, we’re left with altruistic jobs (where you get to help people) such as Occupational therapists 93% female, Nurses 90% female, physical therapists 64% female, massage therapist 80% female, therapists 80% female, nutritionist 90% female, psychiatrist 57%. I could go on and on but I wouldn’t be surprised if as a general rule we would find that women would dominate careers where you get to help people, interact with people, as long as they didn’t require crazy hours and were extremely competitive. No one is saying that women don’t have the ability to acquire the more competitive jobs, hence surgery, because they are without a question just as capable but they choose not to go into those fields as much because they prefer more work/life balance and they care less about prestige, respect, and power.
The below talks about how medical specialists vary by gender and it’s clear that women choose paths where you get to interact with people/children more whereas men choose areas that are again more competitive, more hands on/less human interaction, longer hours.

Also d2 how do you explain Scandinavian countries that are the most egalitarian in the world where women are extremely empowered and encouraged to do whatever they want? The results are astoundingly disproportionate where they major in stem at an even lower rate than in western countries like the US and they choose careers like nursing or teaching at an even higher rate than in the US. Does this not show that their interests lie elsewhere because of the fact they’re biologically different ? How else do you explain this?
Or it shows that your blanket statement about “Scandinavian countries” (super specific) being the most egalitarian in the world doesn’t mean anything? Crazy thought I know 🙄
Sm1 really? Is it really that hard to figure out which countries are part of Scandinavia? Ok, I’m sorry. Let me help....Iceland, Norway, Sweden, and Finland https://www.google.com/amp/www.thejournal.ie/gender-equality-countries-stem-girls-3848156-Feb2018/%3famp=1
https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/m/pubmed/29442575/
Assuming that is true - I don’t know if it is or isn’t- there could be many explanations. “What else could it be other than [insert what I want it to be]?” is not how this works. If biology is your hypothesis, you have to do the work to support it.
Con1 - the studies have been conducted by many phds much smarter than I e.g. Jordan Peterson. A simple google search would pull up numerous scientific articles that back up James Damores claims
Yeah, I stop reading when you call women “females,” and citing a right-wing talk show guy is hilarious. Good luck.
Con1 - wow, ok, its not like females and males aren’t scientific terms or anything 🙄And btw Jordan Peterson is not a right winger....
Lol d1 the liberal left leaning guardian? Really? Jordan Peterson has been asked many times in interviews what his political leanings are and he clearly says he’s not a conservative...he’s just intolerant for bs which includes radical feminism which happens to be an ideology set forth by liberals so you and others automatically assume he’s a conservative.....
https://youtu.be/D5fNu1d0iJw
Please provide some proof other than a left leaning media source...
I have Peterson himself saying he’s not a conservative and if you watch the video he gives ample evidence as to why he is not
I did some quick browsing and I will agree Peterson is not your standard Twitter troll. I still think his ideas are more aligned with the right. He is also a climate change denier. So I won’t dismiss him out of hand, I don’t think he’s very credible, either.
“Female” is a word, it’s just not the right word to use when referring to a woman.
No one wants to have a conversation with someone as long-winded as you. Seriously, this is the ultimate TL;DR.
D1: in all seriousness what is wrong with the word female?
