I am a high performer and in line for another promotion to AVP. I have a good boss, flexibility and earn 200k+. But the company has been crumbling for years, strategy is aimless, CEO is a joke I have been “quiet cracking” for several years. Job market is challenging right now, but I’m also trying to prioritize mental health and happiness. I’m looking to have a conversation with my boss (SVP) about a buyout package. For those with this experience - Tips? Duration of agreement? Amount?

I guess it doesn’t hurt to ask but buyout packages normally happen when the company wants you gone not when you want to leave.

like

Having been a manager in a Fortune 10 company- a buyout is to get rid of employees and reduce payroll. If you are a high performer then you are not on that list.
You need to look for another job. Your mental health and happiness can’t be great in a crumbling company.

I’m just intrigued to know what industry you’re in that goes Executive Director to AVP…

likefunny

Quite common in FinTechs as well. EDs report into AVPs - VPs - CxOs

100% support solving for mental health and happiness. I haven't heard of buyout packages for voluntary decisions to leave - if this includes stock options for you, it might be worth consulting a lawyer or someone else who's successfully left. wishing you best of luck!

Further, SVP is similarly dissatisfied and we have been open about it with one another. They dont want me to leave, but have expressed support for me doing so if I choose and would help in any way they could.

I would also start looking on ladders, they assist executives with their job search.

I've been a government attorney for nearly three years now and have worked in the same office/division since I passed the bar. I've yet to receive a promotion other than two cost of living increases (in sum, a pay increase of 6k over 3 years). I know this is meager, but I'm mostly ok with it, I just want to see some recognition. On the other hand, it's hard for me to imagine negotiating because (given my inexperience), I don't feel I'd be able to do better anywhere else. Any advice?

Hey everyone. I found out we are expecting our first child and I’m really nervous. I got into consulting one year ago and I’m up for promotion this year. With timing of our performance conversations I would have to inform I’m pregnant before outcomes - then shortly after the promotion effective date I would go on a leave for due date. I’ve worked really hard and I’m worried our wonderful news will throw chances with this :(- also if I don’t get promoted pretty sure it’s up or out. Any advice?

Recently promoted senior and the raise was surprisingly higher than expected. I had applied to a position before knowing about the promotion and raise. I don’t think the position will be able to match the new raise since I was promoted early (new job level is based on years of experience rather than title). Should I politely bow out? Not sure how to handle the situation, any advice is much appreciated!

I’m currently in a lease admin type role, in commercial real estate. I make a base salary of $50.5K with about $9k in bonuses. I’ve continuously received 7-10% raises over the last 3 years. I anticipate getting a promotion this year and would like to get closer to $60k for my base salary. I’m the only person in my role at the company and have been a key person in developing our team as we look to expand. Is this unreasonable? Is there a normal increase given with promotions? Thanks in advance!

Started a new job a year ago, high performer. My manager suggested a promotion to Product Manager since that‘s the work I’m doing, but that would be a 50% raise. Higher ups decided instead to make a “new role” (not PM), that has no analog in the company and is hard to price via Glassdoor, etc. I feel like this is to limit my promotion salary to something like 10% from where it currently is. Is there anything I can do? FWIW: I have a PhD from top 5 program and am working in that field. Thanks!

I’ve been approached my by company that one of our large clients (who im currently project managing for) is looking for a consultant of sorts, and if they hire us, I’d be the first person asked to take on this consultant role. This isn’t something my company typically offers and would greatly change the scope of my role. Has anyone ever taken on a role like this? If so, were you able to negotiate a percentage of the consulting fee? Or was it a bump in salary during the project?

So glad I found this bowl. How do you go about negotiating your salary? I applied for a new role and was offered the job. But the pay we haven’t discussed yet. I never did this and heck I don’t know where to start.

I’m interviewing with a startup and the range has a 40k difference from the lowest to highest point. It’s also pre-seed and comes with equity, and health, 401k benefits. It’s a director of sales role so I would eventually be recruiting and managing a team along with building the processes and strategy. What would you consider a fair compensation package? If they offer me something on the lower end of the range, is it still appropriate to counter with an offer that is over their stated range?
