What is your area of practice and the location of the new office?
I would as well. I’m currently keeping my eye out for opportunities in London so I’m curious how OP came about this opportunity.
I dont see how that would affect your ability to get another job stateside, if thats the question, particularly given your experience and that you're at a big fim. Congrats on a unique opportunity!

Are you going to be practicing US law/cross border transactions? I think it’ll be fine, I know a few people who went abroad for a few years (similar to what you’re saying, at a non-US office of US biglaw) and then returned when they wanted to settle down etc. Does your (new?) firm have your practice group in US offices and would those locations be of interest to you down the line? That’ll probably be your easiest move, but I think you’ll be able to lateral too. If you were going to be learning and practicing only French law or UK law or something (especially litigation) I’d be more wary since that doesn’t translate well to US law firms.

They’re not going to actively look overseas for a lateral, but doesn’t mean you can’t apply and be considered if you have the right experience. “I spent 4 years in London doing x practice and really enjoyed it and learned a lot, but looking to come back home to the States and be closer to my family” is a totally reasonable reason that a firm would believe in the future.

I have a friend who practiced in France for a while. He's now back in the States. It seems to have only helped him.

Nope.
It depends on what you’re going to be doing (practice area and type of deals, companies you’re working with). I know a friend that had to take a year or 2 down in class level for corporate firm job in the US when he came back because the work he was doing was nothing like US VC or M&A and he didn’t want to transfer to a us office of his firm
That sucks...this is a transactional practice and I will be practicing (basically exclusively) US law.
It depends on the office location, office size and the practice.
Then I would think twice. Reading your comments I’m guessing capital markets in HK. If it’s somewhere other than HK or SG I don’t think the market will be as sophisticated and you may have difficulty getting the right kind of experience. You may also have to forgo a year or two if you decide to come back and lateral to another firm.
You will have a fairly unique and valuable skill set. Jump on it. Congrats.
Thank you!
