I am not sure if this is the right bowl to ask this question but recently the members of my department started discussing our pay and discovered some of us are being way underpaid which is upsetting people. Anyway, the management team found out about our discussions and has announced a new rule stating we are no longer allowed to talk about our salaries and anyone caught doing so will be disciplined and possibly be fired...continue in comments.

Wow,is this in the US? pretty sure it’s illegal to discipline someone for discussing comp…rather than addressing the root of the problem it’s a shame they are resorting to this type of tactics

like

Really? Information about your salary is a personal thing. If you want to share it with your co-workers, what type of violation are you causing. If you talk about salaries outside the workplace, would they know? Is it still a violation that requires reprimanding an employee? Geez, too much drama for the company.

As far as I know, they haven't addressed the payment issues which is distressing, however, I am more concerned about their new policy. I thought it was illegal for management to tell employees they can't discuss salaries but management seems fairly confident they are allowed to put this policy in place. Who's right and what should I do now that I know I am being paid so much less than the other members of my team who do the same job?

How did the workers confirm they are underpaid? What did they use to measure against?

I’ve been a freelance print production designer for many years, and usually on-site in the before times. Now I work remote, and am finding it uneasy dealing with billing. Before I always billed hourly, which made sense, but it’s becoming an issue now. Some companies don’t have a full days’ work, so it seems wrong to bill full days, and it allows me to juggle projects for different companies, but my billable hours are down. I know I should bill a daily rate, but not sure that will fly. Thoughts?

It’s hard to trust the partners/leadership when they want us to return to office as being better when we increase offshoring? Also, the pressure on billable hours when all that really matters is how much our fixed labor costs vs. how much we can bill (which is usually fixed fee or at least a range) and the fixed labor costs of offshoring is significantly cheaper so the hours don’t matter. Am I mistaken by this viewpoint?
