I am thankful for where I have come from very humble beginnings, but sometimes struggle to come to terms with being late in my career. I am a C2 at 32. Any advice is much appreciated. Thanks.

I started as a Senior Associate at PwC at 34, made Senior manager at 37 (in 3 years) going up for director this year at 38 and will be pushing to become a partner at 42. It’s never late when you are following your passion, you are enjoying what you do and you are growing professionally and personally.

Nicely done. What practice. That is meteoric growth goals. I hope you get it.

you re at bcg. many would killl to be in your shoes. take a steps back and reflect.

I'm 34 SC at Deloitte. Would love to switch to BCG at C2 level. Enjoy the ride, my friend.

This app sometimes man...... You’re probably making upwards of 170-200 grand a year and calling it late/unsatisfying. You’re out earning like 90% of people in the world. I understand being ambitious but don’t say that making that much at that age is a failure/late/slow.

Working at a firm like bcg and making that salary should be rewarding enough in and of itself.

likesmart

Totally agree C1. IDK why we entertain half of these questions.

like

You're at BCG buddy, you've made it to the top of the hill even as a C2

Thank you folks. I appreciate the advice here. I totally understand that I should be very thankful and grateful for everything I have. Our household income is ~$400k; in contrast my parents raised me with a household income of less than $15k back in India, so I should be very very grateful. But still struggle at times just comparing my career to others. I know it is so dumb.

like

I’m 32 and get 130k, stop complaining and suck it up 400k is not low

like

There will always be someone smarter, quicker, wittier, funnier, taller, fitter, sexier, charismatic-er... The list goes on.

Stop comparing yourself to them. There's only one person you can ever justifiably compare yourself to, and that's you.

I mean, shit. I dropped out of high school, got kicked out, addicted to meth, and went to jail a couple times for four misdemeanors (one pled down from a felony) and ended up graduating one of the top 10 IBus programs in the USA, having a crazy start to my career and eventually making six figures as a data scientist. I even won an award for best actor at a short film festival last summer.

Sure, you make a hell of a lot more than me, and I'm 31.

But I wouldn't trade my life for NOTHING.

I was about the same at that level. I had at least one PL who was younger than me. I found that I was able to use my experiences elsewhere (that I had bc I was older) in a way that really helped (still help) me. I wouldn’t say going through bcg at any age is easy by any stretch, but I do think that the “advanced” (lol) age made certain things easier. I’m not altogether certain I would have made it from C to PL had I started younger, for example.

Also, I think I’m able to see more clearly what my long term career / life goals are having been some other places first. And having that view while at bcg is very helpful. So many opportunities, both in and out of the firm.

like

Yes, great perspective and comparison.

This post is such a weird flex lol

That’s not late at all, I am a PL and 33. I know plenty other C2s in their 30s

I a mid/late 30s C and have been older than every PL and P (and one or two MDPs) on my teams.

1) You have plenty of life ahead of you, and there’s no rush to be anywhere professionally except your own goals

2) While you’re in an up or out company, you’re on an accelerated timeline. You may well be a Principal in 2.5 years, which is a great place to be at 36.

34 y/o SC who did the military thing before school and consulting. Use your age and experience to help coach up your often younger managers.

I am a 34 C1. Who cares. I choose to come to have a different experience. Have done engineering for my early years and definitely will leverage it when I exit. The most important thing to ask: is joining BCG better than where you were before? Comparing with others only make you feel worse... People have different journey...

like

Folks I understand this is not the right way to think about this. I have no problem admitting that this is a messed up approach to life. If I thought I was right, I wouldn’t be posting here asking for your opinions.

And I get why some of you find this post frustrating - because it totally is. But I can’t hide the fact that it bothers me to some extent. Yes, the solution isn’t to speed up career, it is to change how I think and gain some perspective. I hope I do.

Thanks everyone for your thoughts and advice. It really helped.

I appreciate you sharing as I feel the same in my current role. It feels good to know we are not alone.

C1 at 33 here 😬🙌🏽. Enjoy your journey, and all the best.

35 PL (for reference about the same age as partner level at BCG) don’t think i could have done it had i not had the work / life experience to get me to this old old age 😉 Leverage my (rapidly growing) grey hair every day to come across as “seasoned” with clients. Leverage it also for the PERSPECTIVE it brings so that i feel comfortable in my skin and position enough to know life isn’t measured by career steps at BCG.

like

I am in the same boat and a little bit older even! You aren’t alone. Those thoughts occur to me from time to time but meh! Who cares? :)

By now you could have started a tech company and changed the world. You know it, I know it. Do you really want confirmation from this group that you’re doing so great!
