You would be surprised how many people working on a lower pay grade willingly work 50-60 hours a week. Go on site for the projects you're working on. The electrician, the carpenter, etc. They often feel like they get cheated for working less.
Electricians and carpenters generally get overtime pay, though. Engineers generally don’t.
My career has been in the manufacturing industry. Large companies will pay overtime to their salaried personnel who support hourly personnel. As soon as I transitioned to an office environment, overtime pay disappeared.
In regards to what your manager said… well, it’s certainly common for salaried personnel to work more than 40 hours per week. Whether it should be expected or not, though, is a different story.
