Don’t go bankrupt on an undergrad. Don’t saddle yourself - or him - with insane amounts of undergrad debt. Scores will get him serious looks, but he should also look beyond academics. What will he do in his free time? Does he like the people he’s met? Does he want to be out of region from everything he’s grow -up with?
University of Illinois at Urbana Champaign! Underrated but excellent CS program and many alum are now major players in Silicon Valley (Yelp, YouTube, PayPal, Oracle, etc founders are alum of U of I).
Ga tech or Carnegie Mellon
What type of environment does your son like? Large school or smaller school with 20 max kids in a class? I agree that it's much easier to decide once you visit a few. Start going to some open houses in the area before looking further. Tons of great schools in Philly suburbs. Or Rutgers and Stevens in NJ. I went to a small private liberal arts school in MD, went for a sport got a great education but wish I went to a cheaper option.
Don’t cheap out on the undergrad. The university brand matters
Georgia Tech.
What state do you live in? Eg if Cali, then UC Berkeley. Depends where you live
OP — top CS degrees pay well. Standard FAANG offer is $600-800k four year package out of undergrad
P2- what state is this? I can assure that Rutgers (OPs state school) doesn’t product anywhere near the same amount of grads to FRONT OFFICE roles at banks, tech firms, consulting companies as an Ivy League.
Uh, who is saying that OP’s son has C-suite aspirations? Also, most people in those roles also had prestigious secondary education experiences...
This depends a lot on what he wants out of college in addition to education. Vandy is probably the best for both educational quality + breadth, and good social life. Stanford or any top UC school also is. Is there a specific reason he doesn’t want to go to an ivy? I think combining CS with liberal arts education puts you in the best position for life after school.
What state are you in? There are public universities for certain states that can provide good education and hold good reputation, at a cost much lower than out of state institutions (e.g. Michigan, Berkeley, etc)
Thanks A3. I M in NJ
Georgia Tech. Atlanta is a great city and growing. Education is also excellent and the cost is reasonable.
University of Maryland
P2: Does that statistic apply to high achieving students at the same rate? I am going to guess that your 35/36 ACT crowd doesn’t change at a 75% rate.
Have you looked at NJIT and TCNJ, both have good CS programs compared to RU
Manchester in the U.K. may be an interesting option. And get him to think more about adjacent careers: security, AI, etc
P2: Do you have data to back your anecdotes. Because in my anecdotal experience at CMU, over 90% over the people I spent time with finished with the major they started with.
B1,can you eloboreate from my context please ?. My son likes languages (taken two other langauge courses for 4 years and got a univ certificate with upenn) and always liked comp science - lately learning machine learning and AI through coursera. The interest changes every two years. Not sure how he can combine both arts and comp science.
D2, Google is your friend. And my “anecdotes” are based on years of working with college students and an M.Ed in higher ed...
P2: you’re the one making claims and then you tell me to google your evidence?
