I asked my manager for a promotion listing all my achievements & how well I have improved the teams’ efficiency at least by 40%. She didn’t respond to my email & asked that we talk about it in our one-on-one. She said “ my position is the next position to yours, are you ready to take my position? I mean I still want to work for another 10-15years.” I was speechless. Have you ever experienced this? How did you navigate this issue? I feel like I’m being retaliated against but I can’t prove it.

I think a way to navigate this issue is to ignore her trying to make you feel bad for asking. Instead pivot the conversation into a growth plan asking the important question, is this company big enough to handle people staying long term and growing upward in the company and express what and where you would like to see yourself in your career in the next 5 to 10 years. If there don't have room to support it's people, then maybe you would need to consider looking for another role and company would have a vision for your growth within their company and see if that aligns with your vision for yourself.

I find her interpretation of your justifiable request oddly self-centered. Why not consider a title and salary bump instead of acting like you taking her job is the only option?

I think she might be making the point that there’s nowhere for you to move up to. It happens people outro their companies. It’s probably time to look for a new job at a different company. I don’t think it was the ideal way to make it.
