Your flight will be cancelled if you're no show for first leg. What you've probably seen people do is skip the second leg. This is technically against the carrier contract, but most people get away with it. Southwest has no cancellation fees so you can always cancel and book a different flight, but you do have to pay the going rate for the new flight.
^that person is a likely a liar. Expensive lesson to learn on trust but verify
I've seen people skip the second leg but not the first. Airlines definitely don't like you doing this and will try to stop you. The problem is, if you're skipping the first leg the airline will know that you skipped it and won't let you board the second. If you skip the second leg, the airlines can't really stop you.
Guys....I drove all the way back to Austin airport and the lady at front desk said she could cancel the first leg without any penalty. So I think it could've been possible to cancel the first leg if I called early.
Yes they will cancel the entire trip and rebook you Dallas to SFO. You will pay (or get a refund) for any difference in fare
I called Southwest if I can do that but they told that I need to cancel my flight and re-book from dallas. The price difference is too high. I saw people doing this but when I said that, they told me that my flight ticket will get cancelled if I don't board my flight in original location. Does anyone have experience with this?
Is there anything I can do? Like call them at the last moment?
Nope. Can’t skip first leg. And on an r/t ticket, can’t skip outbound and keep return. Every airline will cancel
I know a person who used to do this almost every week. He books from a small airport near LA to Seattle and boards the flight at San Francisco instead. This gave me confidence to book it this way! Now looks like I need to turn back.
