I could use some advice! I'm finding it very hard to make this pivot but I'm considering going to the agency side after years of being independent. I truly enjoyed the freelance life but I've been feeling like I'm missing out on learning how to work with a team and just thrive in an agency life. Would you advise someone who's made a good living in freelance to stay where they are or is this journey I'm trying to embark on worth a shot?

I have gone back and forth between agencies and freelance. But if you’re managing to stay busy in this market, and are making a decent living, I can’t see too many advantages to going to an agency. Unless you like office politics, layoffs, backstabbing, and low wages.

As a current freelancer, health insurance and not having to stress about when you’re going to be able to make money again sound cool to me.

Good Lord! Stay where you are. You are living a better life. Nothing great about agency life in my opinion. No agency over your own life is what the agency life is. If you're okay with that, go right ahead.

I've actually considered going freelance previously, but I just never knew where to start. I attempted it during college, but failed miserably at it. Mainly because I didn't know what I was doing at the time. I'm currently working for an agency and I'm....not sure if I want to stick with this company much longer.

I've considered just stepping away from design in general, because I'm not even sure if I could even continue in the field. It's just so cutthroat and competitive, at least in a company/agency setting.

Just hit 10 years on the freedom side this year.

Agency life isn’t for everyone. I couldn’t do it again — there are pros/cons for each side, no doubt.

I’d suggest at least double dipping first. That new shine of working with a team might go dull quickly if you land in a team of asswipes.

Agencies can be fun if you’re a freelancer. Take a full time job and it’s only a matter of time before you wish you hadn’t.

I hear you, the job market is dismal. I was replying with the mindset that the choice exists. I hope you find something soon.

I’ve done both off and on. There are pros and cons on both sides. Freedom and autonomy on the freelance side. Predictability and community on the agency side. If I were you and a decent offer came my way I might jump on it. For d ample, I took my last agency gig when my son needed to go to private school.

I personally love my agency life. Love the people I work with, and they're currently the only friends I have. It's hard to be friends with the people you work with but if you've come around to work with a team like that, there's nothing more joyous.

Nothing wrong with giving it a shot for the experience, and so you don’t regret not trying it out. I think you’ll probably end up going back to freelance before long.

There are a couple of things to consider before you make the jump. In this environment, companies are regularly and often using layoffs. It's not atypical anymore.

So that means your stability in freelancing will be disrupted because you can't keep freelancing and making good money AND work for an agency at the same time. So if they lay you off (by no fault of your own!), you're then out of a job, and some of your freelance clients will move on to another designer.

I’m not trying to persuade you not to—I left freelancing full-time myself—but I want you to think it through.

Have you considered going on a full-time contract somewhere so you'll have some control, be able to plan better, and have a team?

You can always go back to freelance. And if it’s a good stint in the agency, you’ll be even better positioned.

Hey Friends, need help!! I am a developer with 1.6 YoE, got placed on-campus (NIT), can code well in Java and Python, but want to move into an analyst type role as I am not sure if I can be a good 'developer'.
Is it an ideal move for a long career, or if I want to do an MBA in future?
If so, could you please suggest how to prepare for such roles in good companies?
I feel a little lost with a lot of self doubt, and possibly need some counselling on this too. Suggestions are welcome.

I’m honestly tired of being at an agency and not feeling as fulfilled as I used with strategy as a career. Have anyone here make a career change? if so, what other jobs out there - outside of agencies and client side - can you apply what you know as a strategist? Curious if anyone has done it and has some advice.
