I’ve been ADD since I was a kid, but my parents refused to have me diagnosed. They didn’t tell me about my childhood recommendations until I called them at 25 to tell them I’d been formally diagnosed. I always had good(ish) grades (As and Bs) but things that would take my peers an hour would take me 3. I was working until 2AM in high school to get things done. I would find myself rereading the same paragraph for 20min... I couldn’t study in college unless I went to the stacks in the library because I just couldn’t focus. My whole life I’d been told I just needed to try harder, and I felt stupid, honestly.
Fast forward to 25– I’m losing things literally 10-20 times a day. That frustrating feeling when you walk into a room and forgot what you needed? That was every day all of the time for me. What someone said 30sec before, what I was supposed to be doing, what I needed... I was terrified because I thought I was having memory problems. At the behest of my concerned coworkers and partner, I went to a therapist who ran me through a series of tests for different things (I didn’t know what they were for). I was off-the-charts ADD.
ADD is not the same as ADHD. I wasn’t hyperactive, I just couldn’t focus or absorb information. I cried because I finally realized I wasn’t stupid, I just needed help. I’ve been on medication for 6 years and I am so much better able to function with my small daily dose of medicine. I cycle off of it 1-2 days a week to keep my body from getting used to it, and it’s like I’m a record skipping on days when I don’t take it. The difference is tremendous.
If you think you might have a problem, talk to someone. ADD/ADHD does not mean you can’t be successful. It just means you have to work a LOT harder for it. I would recommend getting a second opinion; it could be very worth your time.
Might try behavioral therepy too! But Im gonna try cycling on and off the pills if I am prescribed them. Thank you again:)
I tend to speed a lot because I am quite impatient and I sometimes do not realize Im going +80. I act pretty impulsively esp with maintaining relationships. I lose focus easily during meetings if I am not constantly taking notes. I feel like I need to walk or move around because I do not like staying still at all. I lose focus during conversation and I have anxiety and get depressed and happy easily. I also used to speak wayyyy to quickly but I have gotten better control of thag. I dont like to take it easy or watch long movies unless I am alone in a dark room so I can pay attention otherwise I usually forget the movie.
I feel the need to talk to my teammates when I probably shouldnt distract them... there are a lot of things that may point to me having ADHD.. but my doc says because I managed to get good grades (I had to record lectures often since I couldnt pay attention and absorb with all the people around me) I am worried because I do not want to esp lose focus while driving or mess up on client work. I do not know if I should take meds or if I should go to behaviorial therapy. I am a 23 y/o female that never received help because I was successful accoding to docs and I feel like this is gonna turn around on me soon
If anyone has experience in this please let me know what I should do About it. I cant keep losing time during the day because I am not focused. I work late hours on days because I just cannot be productive with many people around me / clothes are uncomfortable (super sensitive to clothing)
That said lots of people just want an adderall prescription so primary care docs are wary prescribing it. See a psychiatrist who also does behavioral therapy and you guys can work out a treatment plan
Start with therapy and then find a psychiatrist and explore medication options with them after a diagnosis or symptoms assessment. A lot of those symptoms fall under AD/HD, but they also fall under other psychiatric categories for consideration as well, and overlap with things like simply having higher energy.
Ha, you literally just described me by 98%. I’m 31 and still trucking along, still struggle with all that you mentioned but I’ve become better at controlling it enough to get through work and life in a successful manner. I know the feeling, and it really sucks, especially when you look around and see everyone else “normal”. In my personal life what’s really helped is, my wife, she understands how I am, accepts me, and is very patient with me. Anyway, there’s solutions like some of mentioned, so don’t be afraid to explore them, I wish you all the best!
What were you focusing on in the car?
Just thinking about what to do with boy issues and then thining about how crampy I was
Use your EAP through work. You should get 3 sessions covered then you can continue. They generally also let you try out doctors to make sure you are with one that you like m. This is the easiest way to start.
We should all create a support group, I have the same problem 😂, I’m practicing mediation and it helps a bit.
My S/O studies mental health counseling and what you have described screams “see a professional” based on the cases she has described to me. In my opinion (not experienced it myself or studied it) you should see a psychiatrist as it seems this issue could be detrimental to your personal health and well being (i.e. driving on the wrong side of the road). Goodluck with whatever you decide!
Noise canceling headphones at work and Uber everywhere to start.
Good luck OP 🌺
Following because you described me to a t.
Never diagnosed, in college was told that I suffered from anxiety & depression...possibly a mood disorder-which never really felt right to me. I’m not a professional but from what I’ve been reading recently this lines up with how attention disorders presents itself in females. I very much have the hardest time paying attention and staying focused during the day. My colleagues know that I take great notes...because it is the only way I can pay attention during calls - to be constantly writing otherwise I’m paying 0 attention
you shouldn't think you have ADHD just because you almost got into a car accident.l go talk to a professional.
How is you energy level? Another possibility is irregular sleep / exhaustion. It leads to inability to focus as well, among other things, as well. I’ve noticed my driving change when overly tired too (driving faster, lost in my thoughts, etc.), probably in some way a bodily reaction to stay awake since I’m operating a vehicle. Food for thought, but regardless, take care of yourself.
